Condition: new. (Hardcover, 2011). 2011 1st edition. Square folio (277 x 312mm). Pp156. Colour paintings by the author throughout, map end-papers. Brown boards, spine titled in gilt. Mint new copy in dust-wrapper. "Renso is a young master of the photo realistic style of painting, following in the footsteps of the greats such as Robert Bateman and Carl Brenders. This book is a collection of paintings and sketches of wildlife encountered during his travels in Europe. Species covered include the familiar mute swan, in fine detail, through to the elusive brown bear, lynx and wolf, within their secretive haunts." "This is not an encyclopedia of Europe or a biological reference book. This will be a book motivating people to discover and enjoy Europe's nature. It is the story of a journey, sometimes crystal clear, sometimes surrounded in mist, but always meandering, seeking its way, like a branching river, through areas that have fascinated me and that keep inspiring me." Sheppard, Raymond (illustrator). (Hardcover, 2009 ). 2009 1st edition. Square folio (260 x 310mm). Pp352. Colour paintings & sketches throughout, decorative end-papers. Black boards. Mint in dust-wrapper. "Raymond Sheppard was a hugely gifted artist and illustrator who studied and worked in and around London during the first half of the twentieth century. He was a very versatile painter who specialised in mostly animal subjects, spending many hours at the London Zoo researching and sketching. Despite the interruption of the Second World War and a long [and fatal] illness from cancer, he was still a very prolific artist. Much of the book's text [consists of] Raymond Sheppard's own words and has been taken from the three 'Studio Publications' on drawing published in the late 1940's and early 1950's." This book also includes many of Sheppard's book illustrations, especially those from Jim Corbett's books, Maneaters of Kumaon and others, and those done for Hemingway's The Old Man and The Sea, including a number that were not published. These interests grew with his schooling and continued during a degree in graphics and illustration at Leeds, followed by a masters degree in natural history illustration at the Royal College of Art in London. After graduating David moved back to his home county of Yorkshire and now paints full time with intimate observation and lively represenation. October 2007 saw the publication of David's first solo book, True to Form. Otter Shores is the culmination of his work with these elusive animals portraying observations and encounters on the wild and remote west coast of Scotland. Constantly subject to the dynamics of weather, light and season. Through sketches and paintings he illustrates the otters' world, their behaviour and habits, giving pointers to the would-be otter watcher on the tracks and signs to look out for. .David uses both sketches and watercolours to portray these fascinating mammals in a wide range of habitats, from kelp strewn rocky shores, with herons and gulls, to luxuriant tree lined rivers."
