Softcover. Condition: Good. Reprint. This is an English translation of an Italian work first published in 1995. Based in Milan, Italy, Giussani heads the Communion and Liberation movement and is a council for the Congregation for the Clergy and the Pontifical Council for the Laity. He discusses education in terms of fundamental truths, in particular, the element of faith. It presents the argument that without the fundamental factors of tradition, the young person is merely a fragile leaf separated from its branch.

While in the early years of the century Catholics in America were for the most part distrusted outsiders with respect to the dominant culture, by the 1960s the mainstream of American Catholicism was in many ways "the cultures loudest and most uncritical cheerleader." Mark Massa explores the rich irony in this postwar transition, by examining key figures in American culture in the last century.

Softcover. Condition: Good. 0. Christianity is, above all, a way of seeing. What unites figures as diverse as James Joyce, Caravaggio, John Milton, the architect of Chartres, Dorothy Day, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the later Bob Dylan is a peculiar and distinctive take on things, a style, a way, which flows finally from Jesus of Nazareth. Origen remarked that holiness is seeing with the eyes of Christ. Teilhard de Chardin said, with great passion, that his mission as a Christian thinker was to help people see. And Thomas Aquinas said that the ultimate goal of the Christian life is a beatific vision, an act of seeing. This book is about coming to vision through Christ. - Robert Barron, from the Prelude.

Book
Softcover. Condition: Good. It is a common phenomenon in the history of religions for a new religious community to break away from its parent community, often with scorn and rejection. But in the case of Christianity and Jewish religion, anti-Jewish polemic in the sacred scriptures of the newer religious community has provided for later generations the theological basis for oppressive and dehumanizing treatment of those who have continued to adhere to the old religion. Now that the new religion has itself attained maturity, the time is ripe for sincere and responsible self-criticism, and Mature Christianity is a contribution to this important theological agenda. The first classification of anti-Jewish polemic identified within Mature Christianity is Christological. It is present in every segment of the New Testament and can be expressed in such simple terms as: Then Adonai was Lord, but now Jesus is Lord. Somewhat as Jews understood God (Elohim) through Adonai their Lord, the followers of Jesus began to understand God (Theos) through Jesus their Lord, an identity normative for Christians since that time. Mature Christianity asserts that the polemical aspect of the belief in Jesus as Lord can be eliminated without repudiating the Christological essence of Christianity.Supersessionistic, the second classification of anti-Jewish polemic within the New Testament, has caused Christians largely to isolate themselves from Jewish expressions of faith in God during the past nineteen centuries. Beck shows that this theological isolation can be broken as Christianity matures and as theological conversation between Jews and Christians increases. Mature sensitivity is needed in the Christian translation and usage of New Testament material that includes anti-Jewish supersessionistic polemic. The third type of anti-Jewish polemic within the New Testament - an outgrowth of the supersessionistic polemic - is defamatory polemic. Defamatory polemic is not essential to the Christian message nor to Christianity; it is negative and damaging to Jews and dehumanizing to Christians. Mature Christianity repudiates the defamatory anti-Jewish polemic of the New Testament.Norman A. Beck carefully identifies the anti-Jewish polemic within each New Testament document, discusses reasons for the development of that polemic, places the anti-Jewish polemic of the New Testament into specific classification, and suggests ways in which mature Christians can repudiate the defamatory anti-Jewish polemic of the New Testament without damage to their theology.

Book
Softcover. Condition: Good. Illustrated. Preachers, group leaders, teachers, and all who are serious about understanding and spreading the Christian message will benefit from the material in this book. Christian theologians, in their concern for eternal truths, have sometimes been slow to recognize the importance of how communication occurs. Yet in a religion with revelation as its very core, it is crucial to be aware of new communication technology, understand how the message is shared, and identify barriers to communication. The principles discussed are distilled from a series of conferences that brought pastors and theologians together to discuss the core of their faith and how, in a globalized world, faith can be discussed intelligently. The helpful, field-tested chapters include useful diagrams and lists as well as ample questions for group reflection.

Softcover. Condition: Good. In a series of three small books, Pierre-Marie Emonet brings the riches of philosophy within the reach of all, not just those with the time and inclination to work through erudite philosophical treatises. Reaching out to the ordinary person unfamiliar with technical philosophical language, he frequently turns to the words of the poets in order to approach the same truths investigated by the philosophers, recognizing that "the poets also are attracted - like the bee by the flower - by what is most profound, most hidden, most substantial in the things of nature."In this first volume, Emonet introduces the basic principles of classical Thomistic metaphysics using clear, simple language, exploring the mystery of the origin of things in the world, their purpose, and their final end. The following two volumes will treat the philosophy of the human person and the philosophy of God.

Softcover. Condition: Good. Reprint. A Benedictine monk at Maria Laach, Odo Casel was a major force in the movement for renewal of liturgy in this century. He objected to rationalistic or anthropocentric interpretations of the Christian religion that would reduce it either to a collection of doctrines or to a moral code. Instead, he insisted that the core of Christian faith is the worship of a sacred mystery. For Casel, liturgy means "the making real of the mystery of Christ in the new alliance throughout the whole church, in all centuries; in it her healing and glory are made fact." This essay presents the heart of Casel's theology of mystery, summing up his view that the encounter with the divine Mystery in liturgy is "the most central and most essential action of the Christian religion."

Softcover. Condition: Good. Revised, Expanded, Subsequent. Written That You May Believe has quickly become a standard text for the feminist-informed study of the Gospel of John. Scholars have hailed its publication and dedicated a session at the American Academy of Religion to discuss its message. Lay readers have welcomed it as a companion in opening up the meaning of the Fourth Gospel, and small groups have begun using it as a guide in their devotional reading. This revised edition, enriched with new chapters from Sandra Schneiders and a study guide prepared by John C. Wronski offers new ways to nourish faith through the rich symbolism of the Gospel of John and an invitation to "dwell in" the liberating truth of Jesus.
