Managing editor Moment magazine, 1987-1990. Editor Time-Life Books, 1990-1996. Ingrid Fetz was born March 8, 1915, in New York City (and reportedly died in 2001). As a child, Fetz was already interested in drawing. She attended the School of Special Studies at Columbia University and the Workshop School of Advertising and Editorial Art in New York City. Fetz illustrated more than 25 books for children, including books by Charlotte Anker, Maud Hart Lovelace, Carol Ryrie Brink, Johanna Hurwitz, and several collaborations with Eleanor Lowenton (E.L.) Clymer. Determined to find a scientific interest that will please her scientific father, eleven-year-old Jenny becomes interested in collecting fossils. Ever since the divorce, her father came to take her out each Sunday, but Jenny found it hard to think of things to talk to him about, and she was always afraid he would get bored and break the habit of coming. But when she found the "Treasure", a collection of fossils which showed the land had once been covered by ocean, Jenny felt that she could show her father that she, too, could be scientific. Derived from a Kirkus review: Jenny's divorced father, a scientist, is one of those parents who turn every game into a learning experience and show disappointment when you don't come up with the right answers. That's why Jenny is so determined to find fossils around her new development in suburban Washington and why she makes cookies for a suspicious, gun-toting old black man who is reluctant to give her the special stones she finds on his property. (Toby, her younger black friend and new neighbor, upsets her by suggesting that the old man isn't as dumb as Jenny thinks he is.) Anyway Jenny gets her reward when she's hit on the head trying to save her fossil "treasure" from a bulldozer, and Daddy at her bedside proves that he cares more about her than about science. As if that's not enough, after she's better the museum man asks to keep one of the bones she'd found, the jaw of a possibly brand new species of extinct crocodile which might even be named after her.
