Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. During the late 1980s, the former Socialist Federal Republic of Jugoslavia (SFRJ) a country dominating the Balkans experienced a period of major crisis. Led by the Communist Party, the nation's leadership failed to understand the depth of political changes all over Eastern Europe, and then split along ethic lines. In 1988-1989, ethnic Albanians in the autonomous province of Kosovo began demanding independence: the authorities of the SFRJ reacted by suppressing the resulting demonstrations. In the Federal Republic of Serbia, public opinion slid into nationalism, which the local communist leadership exploited to maintain itself in power. By 1990, nationalistic leaders rose to power in Slovenia and Croatia, and publicly announced their intention to secede these federal republics. Under the heavy shadow of growing war-mongering, politicians from all three sides met to reach settlements on the division of their and their emerging nation's interests. The last few influential supporters of the preservation of a federal state were quickly pushed aside, and the powerful military of the SRFJ the Yugoslav Popular Army (Jugoslovenska Narodna Armija, JNA) became an instrument of political games. The Slovenian and Croatian proclamations of independence, in June 1991, proved to be the drop that over spilled the barrel. Already split by deep rifts within their top political and military leaders, the federal authorities launched a rather confused attempt to recover control over the external borders of the SRFJ. The nascent Slovenian military resisted, causing a series of bloody clashes with the JNA. Tasked with the transport and protection of federal employees, the Yugoslav Air Force and Air Defence (JRViPVO) found itself in the thick of combat from day one of this conflict, when the Slovenes shot down two of its helicopters. In return, the JRViPVO began flying attack sorties, which ended only through a political agreement of 2 July 1991, and the decision for Yugoslav authorities to withdraw from Slovenia. 110 photographs, 10 maps, 12-15 colour profiles The JRVIPVO in Yugoslav War is the first ever authoritative account of combat operations of the former Yugoslav Air Force in the conflict that shaped the modern-day southern Europe. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Flying light helicopters in Northern Ireland during the Troubles was a dangerous and demanding task. Terrorists were determined to prosecute a campaign against military aircraft operating in South Armagh and beyond, while roadside bombs made the security forces dependent on helicopters for surveillance and troop movements. The Westland Gazelle is one of the longest serving and most successful reconnaissance and observation helicopters. Drawing on his experience as a Gazelle pilot during a real time four-month tour of duty, the author describes what it was actually like to fly as a squadron pilot in the fight against terrorism. This interesting book takes you on an aerial odyssey of the province during 1990 when the conflict was at its heights. This narrative non-fiction account is unique because previous authors on the subject have not been pilots. The author describes the daily experience of being on the front line operating with different organisations in the security forces and how aerial support contributed toward keeping the peace. With plenty of technical flying content, and some historical context, the book will appeal to both aviation enthusiasts and military historians. AUTHOR: Peter Shaw was born in Aldershot and educated at Cranbrook School and the RMA Sandhurst. After a sixteen-year career in the British Army during which time he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps, he became an airline pilot flying for a major carrier. A qualified flying instructor and keen sailor, he recently retired from aviation. He is the author of several online guides including Zero to Hero. Nighthawk One is his first book. He is married, has two grown-up daughters, and divides his time between Hampshire and Spain. 19 colour photos, 1 b/w map, 1 line drawing From Belfast to Bandit Country. The true story of a squadron pilot during the deadly Troubles in Northern Ireland and the application and determination required to fly the British Army Gazelle helicopter. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Split into two for decades between the late 1940s and early 1990s, Germany was the hottest 'battlefield' of the Cold War. Its western part was dotted by dozens of major military facilities of the reconstituted national armed forces, and those of the NATO allies, foremost the USA, Great Britain and France. Even more so, whole third of East Germany was under the control of the Armed Forces of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and housed several dozens of major air and ground units. On the ground, the city of West Berlin - situated in the center of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), and the three occupation zones there controlled by the USA, Great Britain, and France, was connected to the outside world only via tightly controlled railways, waterways or autobahns. However, in the air, three 'aerial corridors' connected it with West Germany. Far away from high-profile intelligence-gathering operations - like those by Lockheed U-2s - several intelligence agencies of the USA, Great Britain and France exploited this fact to run clandestine operations along these corridors. Principally conducted by adapted transport or liaison aircraft - which received a host of clandestine modifications - such operations often took their crews into the very center of what was perceived as the 'danger zone' by NATO: the airspace over some of the most sensitive Soviet military installations. Danger Zone Volume 1, is the first comprehensive and in-depth study of intelligence-gathering efforts by aircraft operated by, or on behalf of, the US intelligence agencies. It provides a carefully researched review of the involved equipment, modifications, maintenance, flight operations, post-flight activities and the resulting intelligence analysis, set within the context of the unique situation surrounding West Berlin during the Cold War, and its air corridors. AUTHOR: Kevin Wright is a regular contributor to aviation magazines (including 'Aviation News' and 'Aeroplane') and is an accomplished air-to-air photographer. He has a lifelong special interest in Cold War intelligence collection and produced numerous articles on related topics. Other recent publications include co-authoring a book, with Peter Jefferies, on allied intelligence collection along the Berlin Corridors. He taught international security and politics for over 15 years at universities in the UK and overseas. His PhD was on the role of expert communities in arms control policy making which became the topic of his first book. He currently lives in the Republic of IE - Ireland. 100 b/w photos, 7 colour photos, 12 colour profiles, 2 maps, 1 table Split into two for decades between the late 1940s and early 1990s, Germany was the hottest 'battlefield' of the Cold War. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Volume 8 of the Air Power and the Arab World, 1909-1955 mini-series continues the story of the men and machines involved in the first half century of military aviation in the Arab World. These years opened with the Arab countries and their military forces still caught up in the final years of the Second World War. This was followed by a brief period of soaring hopes and often unrealistic ambitions. Meanwhile, the crisis in Palestine was deepening. During the immediate post-war years Arab popular opinion grew increasingly angry, fearing that the Zionist settler community was determined to establish a specifically Jewish state in Palestine at the expense of the indigenous Arab population. Furthermore, it was also becoming clear that the so-called Great Powers which dominated the newly established United Nations Organization were unlikely to stand in the way. Following the Second World War, French influence in the Middle East had collapsed, though this was not as yet the case in North Africa. American influence was growing in the region, though the USA was emerging as pro-Zionist in its policy. The Soviet Union, though nominally also pro-Zionist, still remained a distant and largely insignificant player in Middle Eastern affairs; its only interest being to cause problems for its "Western Power" rivals. This left the British almost literally holding the ring as the dominant imperial power in the Arab Middle East, both in military and political terms. At the same time the British government, the British military establishment and indeed the British public, were showing themselves to be desperately eager to get rid of what was perceived as the burden of the Palestine Problem. AUTHORS: David Nicolle is a leading expert on the history of medieval warfare, in particular the Crusades and Middle Eastern warfare, and he is a prolific writer of books on these subjects as well as articles and magazine articles. Among his many previous works are The Hundred Years War; The Mongol Warlords;Saladin and the Saracens; The Crusades; The Medieval Warfare Sourcebook; Hattin 1187 and Fighting for the Faith. Late Air Vice Marshal Gabr Ali Gabr PhD (EAF, ret.) served as the pilot of a De Havilland Vampire fighter jet during the Suez War, 1956. After concluding higher military education at the Air Warfare Institute in 1960, he served as an instructor in air tactics at the Air Warfare Institute in 1962-64. Between 1966-67, he was a staff officer during the June 1967 War and went on to be chief of the Operational Training Branch in 1968-73; he was also chief of of the Operations Group during the October 1973 War with Israel. After serving as an instructor in the art of operations and as the chief air force chair at High War College from 1977 until 1982, he received his PhD at Nasser High Academy in 1989. He then moved into writing and has since published seven books and dozens of studies and articles on the history of air warfare in Egypt and abroad. 74 b/w photos, 1 map, 21 colour profiles, 1 table Volume 8 of the first and only book-series to cover the operational history of all Arab air forces through the early decades of their existence. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the early hours of 22 November 1970, six Portuguese warships surrounded Conakry, the capital of the Republic of Guinea, on the West African coast. Taking advantage of the darkness of the night, a military force landed on the northern and southern coasts of the sleeping city. At the head of these men was a young Portuguese marine officer, Commander Alpoim Calvao, who had been appointed to command this secret operation, codenamed Green Sea - Mar Verde in Portuguese. The main objective of the invasion was to promote a coup d'etat in the former French colony and overthrow the regime of President Sekou Toure, who supported the guerrillas of the PAIGC (African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde), who were fighting for the independence of Portuguese Guinea. The invaders also sought to destroy the naval resources that the guerrillas and the Guinean navy had in the port of Conakry, capture the leader of the party, Amilcar Cabral, and rescue a group of Portuguese soldiers held in a PAIGC prison. The incursion would not have the expected success concerning the coup d'etat, and Portugal would be condemned by international organisations for the invasion of a sovereign state, but this operation would remain in the memory of many as the most daring carried out during the colonial war in Africa, although the Portuguese regime never recognised its involvement.A blow-by-blow reconstruction of the famous Portuguese commando attack and a coup attempt in Conakry, the capital of Guinea-Conakry, that caused a major diplomatic crisis between multiple capitals in Europe and Africa. AUTHOR: Jose Matos is an independent researcher in military history in Portugal with a primary interest in operations of the Portuguese Air Force during the colonial wars in Africa, especially in Guinea. He is a regular contributor to numerous European magazines on military aviation and naval subjects, and has collaborated in the major project 'The Air Force at the end of the Empire', published in Portugal in 2018. This is his first instalment for Helion. 77 b/w photos, 2 colour maps, 8 colour profiles, 3 charts/tables The first authoritative account of Operation Mar Verde: the Portuguese amphibious assault on Guinea's capital in 1970 aiming to stage a coup and destroy the Guinean Air Force. As of 1975, the decades long insurgency in Angola appeared to be short of its conclusion. However, with no less than three major insurgent movements fighting for supremacy, the war went on and then South Africa, USA, the Soviet Union, Zaire and Cuba became involved. Based on extensive research with help of Angolan and Cuban sources, the War of Intervention in Angola provides a unique insight precisely into the topic. The volume is illustrated with over 100 rare photographs, 10 maps and 12 colour profiles. AUTHORS: Tom Cooper is an Austrian aerial warfare analyst and historian. Following a career in worldwide transportation business during which he established a network of contacts in the Middle East and Africa he moved into narrow-focus analysis and writing on small, little-known air forces and conflicts Adrien Fontanellaz, from Switzerland, is a military history researcher and author. 97 photos, 6 maps, 18 colour profiles, 13 tables This book traces the failures of the US-supported FNLA, the growth and reorganization of the MPLA into a conventional army; deployment of Cuban military contingents; and the performance and experiences of the MPLA and Cuban forces at war with South Africans and the third Angolan insurgent group UNITA. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Mikoyan i Gurevich MiG-21 has been built in greater numbers than any other combat aircraft since 1945. It also saw service with more air forces than any other type manufactured over the last 70 years. Locally designated the 'L' (for Lovac or fighter), for more than half a century over 260 MiG-21s in 12 different versions and sub-variants formed the backbone of the Yugoslav Air Force and Air Defence Force (JRV i PVO) and later the Serbian Air Force (RV i PVO). Entering service at the peak of the Cold War, the MiG-21 quickly replaced the US-supplied North American F-86E and F-86D Sabres in the Yugoslav inventory. The first version, MiG-21F-13, was followed by the MiG-21PFM in 1967, and MiG-21M/MF in 1970. Serving with the 204th Fighter Regiment, the task of these fighters was the air defence of Belgrade, capital of Yugoslavia. Whenever a new and more advanced variant became available, older types were handed over to other units. This is how the 117th Fighter Regiment came into being, based at the famous underground air base outside the town of Bihac. The Pristina-based 83rd Fighter Regiment followed in 1972. In Tito's Yugoslavia, the MiG-21 was also deployed for strategic reconnaissance. In 1968-1969, the JRV i PVO introduced the MiG-21R to service, which became the primary photo- and electronic reconnaissance platform of the entire military. The importance of the fleet was further increased in 1984, when US-made Fairchild KA-112 LORAP containers were added to their arsenal. The final and most widely used version became the MiG-21bis, delivered to Yugoslavia in the 1977-1983 period. By the time of the dissolution of the country, in 1991-1992, it formed the backbone of the fleet and saw intensive combat service as a fighter-bomber during the conflicts in Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Of particular interest during this period was the widespread use of diverse ordnance of native and NATO-origins. AUTHORS: Bojan Dimitrijevic is the Deputy Director of the Institute for Contemporary History, in Belgrade, Serbia. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Officially established on 22 April 1931, around a core of 5 pilots and 32 aircraft mechanics, the Royal Iraqi Air Force was the first military flying service in any Arab country. Coming into being with the task of supporting the Iraqi armed forces and the British against revolts by local tribes, it saw extensive combat and gradually grew into a potent force. During the Anglo-Iraqi War of 1941, it became involved in its first conventional campaign in support of an anti-British coup but was destroyed as a fighting force. It was still recovering when deployed in combat again, this time against Israel in the course of the Palestine War of 1948-1949. During the relatively quiet decade of the 1950s, the air force experienced a rapid growth, further intensified once the monarchy was toppled during the 14 Tammuz Revolution in 1958, and once again, after two additional coups in 1963. During all of these affairs, a dozen additional coup attempts in the 1960s, and then during the long and bitter war against a Kurdish insurgency in the north, and the next clash with Israel in 1967, the Iraqi Air Force continued playing a dominant role in the fate of the country. The situation changed only little following the coup of 1968 that brought the Ba'ath Party to power. What did instrument a major change was the air force's involvement in the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War, and then the showdown with the Iranian-supported Kurdish insurgency in northern Iraq in 1974-1975. These two affairs taught the Iraqis that numbers alone did not make an air force. Correspondingly, during the second half of the 1970s, Baghdad embarked on a project based on full technology transfer from France, which was intended to result in preparing the IrAF for the 21st century. This process hardly began when the new ruler in Baghdad, Saddam Hussein at-Tikriti, led his country into an invasion of neighbouring Iran, embroiling it in a ruinous, eight-year-long war. Amazingly enough, for the first few years of that conflict, the IrAF still continued planning and growing as if there was no conflict to fight, although frequently suffering heavy losses while due to the micromanagement from the government de-facto fighting with one hand tied to its backs. It was only the experience of facing sustained and massive Iranian offensives of the 1984-1986 period that prompted Baghdad into unleashing the air force into an all-out campaign against the Iranian economy that effected a turn-around in the war. Almost unexpectedly, the IrAF emerged from the eight years of Iran stronger, better equipped and better trained, and more experienced than ever before. However, Saddam Hussein took care to remove all of its top commanders, and replace them with his favorites, thus de-facto castrating the most powerful branch of the Iraqi armed forces shortly before embarking upon his ultimate adventure: the invasion of Kuwait in 1990. The resulting Second Persian Gulf War of 1991 left the IrAF in tatters: mauled by sustained air strikes on its air bases, and cut off from its former sources of equipment and training, it was never to recover again, and rather vegetated for the last years of existence, pending its ultimate destruction during the US-led invasion of 2003. Although virtually 'born in battle', collecting precious combat experience and playing an important role in so many internal and external conflicts, the Iraqi Air Force remains one of the least known and most misinterpreted military services in the Middle East. Richly illustrated, Wings over Iraq provides a uniquely compact yet comprehensive guide to its operational history, its crucial officers and aircraft, and its major operations.Officially established on 22 April 1931, around a core of 5 pilots and 32 aircraft mechanics, the Royal Iraqi Air Force was the first military flying service in any Arab country. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In May 2023, Israel will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding as a state, and also the 75th anniversary of the establishment of its air force. The maturation of what was once the Israel Defence Force/Air Force (IDF/AF), and since 2005 is the Israeli Air-Space Force (IASF), is a fascinating study of a military force working to meet shifting obligations under multiple impediments while being repeatedly tested in combat. Many factors over the seven and a half decades shaped its air fighting capability, not the least being the demands of the evolving battlefield, uncertain funding, available weapons, and quality of personnel. Tactics and doctrine were, in turn, shaped by government policies, international pressures, and confronting adversaries likewise evolving. When the trials in war, or combat short of war came, success was a measure of its weapons' suitability, relevancy of training, and experience of personnel. Volume 2 documents the evolution of the Israeli air force from the aftermath of the 1973 war, through the events in Lebanon and up to the present day. It stands apart from many other books in performing this examination in a more dispassionate and critical manner, without the common hyperbole. A great deal of space is devoted to description of constant shifts in its equipment - especially aircraft and other weapons - and its organisational structure over time. A summary of the geopolitical milieu in which Israel and its military institutions have dwelled over the 75 years helps to explain the material acquisition and tactical choices while placing in context the operations in which they were employed. Written at a time of historical challenges for Israeli Air and Space Force, and the Israel Defence Forces as a whole, this is an exclusive, highly informative and richly illustrated source of reference. 92 b/w & 9 colour photos, 12 colour profiles, 1 colour plate of unit insignia, 4 b/w maps, 4 tables, 1 diagram Documents the evolution of the Israeli air force from the aftermath of the 1973 war, through the events in Lebanon and up to the present day. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The communist victory in the Chinese civil war resulted in the formation of a new socialist state the People's Republic of China. The Soviets were the first to recognise the PRC, and subsequently provided China with considerable assistance. After Stalin's death, however, relations rapidly deteriorated over disagreements regarding Stalin's legacy and co-existence with capitalist states. With the 'cultural revolution' in the PRC, these disagreements intensified: the two sides accused each other of revisionism, dogmatism and nationalism. Economic failures and social chaos forced the PRC leadership to seek a method for divesting itself of responsibility for what had taken place. As a solution, they organised a military conflict on the border with the Soviet Union to rally the people around the PRC leadership, while at the same time insignificant enough in scale to prevent it from escalating into a full-fledged war. On 2 March 1969, a specially prepared Chinese army detachment made a surprise attack on Soviet border guards patrolling the border in the area of Damansky Island on the Ussuri River. In the subsequent battle, the dead on both sides numbered more than 50. On 15 March 1969, a much larger battle took place in this same area, in which both sides used artillery and armoured vehicles; the casualties numbered in the hundreds. There were conflicts along the entire Sino-Soviet border from Primorye to Central Asia in the following weeks and months. Although smaller in scale than the Damansky events, men still died. Shooting on Damansky continued practically into mid-September. On 13 August 1969 there occurred one more large-scale military clash, in the area of Lake Zhalanashkol, after which the political leadership of the USSR and PRC recognised the very real possibility that the border war might escalate into a full-scale war, with the potential use of nuclear weapons. The second volume of this two-part mini-series examines events from 15 March 1969 until the conclusion of the conflict. Principal attention is focused on a detailed chronological description of the battles, Soviet and Chinese tactics, and the weapons used. Inasmuch as the present state policies in Russia and China are aimed not only at keeping silent about the 1969 events, but also opposing any attempts to study what happened in detail, the authors have relied on finding veterans of the battles and obtaining from them documentary evidence of those distant events. The authors believe that this study is the most detailed and objective work on the theme of the 1969 Sino-Soviet border war. 3 colour profiles, 6 colour ills, 2 colour maps, 57 b/w photos, 10 b/w maps This second volume is a detailed and unbiased study of the military, historical, and political circumstances of the 1969 Sino-Soviet border war. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Both the Azules and Colorados shared Argentina's alignment with the United States in the Cold War and the need to combat communism, but they disagreed on the attitude to take with Peronism and the professional profile that the Armed Forces should have. The Azules proposed a limited integration of Peronism into Argentine political life and an Armed Forces with a high degree of autonomy and unified through a strict chain of command. The Colorados equated Peronism with Communism, advocating the complete eradication of both, and were characterized by a greater politicization of the military and deliberative inner workings. By 1962, each side was fighting to gain control over the entire Armed Forces and thus be in a position to exercise guardianship over the government and set the course that national policy should follow. Politically, the radicals of the people (balbinistas) were closer to the Colorados, while the intransigent radicals (frondisistas) were closer to the Azules. The combats included the participation of civilian commandos, mainly on the Colorado side. The names "Azules" and "Colorados" appeared during the fighting in September 1962 and have their origin in the terminology used historically in the study of military science, to designate the two hypothetical sides facing each other in a simulated war. The confrontation between the two groups was expressed in several episodes and two armed clashes, the first that took place between 16 September and 18 September 1962, and the second between 2 April and 5 April 1963. The combat on 1 April established victory for the Azules, dominated by the chiefs of the Cavalry and the leadership of General Juan Carlos Ongania, over the whole of the Armed Forces and the civil and ecclesiastical sectors that supported the so-called "Military Party". Three years later, Ongania would impose the first permanent civic-military dictatorship in Argentine history. AUTHOR: Antonio Luis Sapienza Fracchia was born in Asuncion, Paraguay on 14 May 1960. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 2021, Helion & Company, a specialist military publishing house based in the UK, published two books by Harold Orenstein and Dmitry Ryabushkin: The Sino-Soviet Border War of 1969 Volume 1: How a Nuclear War between the USSR and China almost started in 1969 and The Sino-Soviet Border War of 1969 Volume 2: Confrontation at Lake Zhalanashkol August 1969. For the first time, the Sino-Soviet war is being examined in such detail in the English language. However good as it may be, Harold Orenstein and Dmitry Ryabushkin's books are written without solid facts from China and can only give partial interpretation to this brief war. We must have facts and information from both sides to understand the battle and circumstances. This book, WHEN BROTHERS FIGHT Chinese Eyewitness Accounts of the Sino-Soviet Border Battles,1969 by Benjamin Lai and Zhang Yiming, aims to fill the gap with actual accounts from Chinese veterans who took part in these border wars. To give the reader a taste of what happened, the authors select two of the best-known incidents of the period, the battle of Zhenbao Island (March-May 1969) and the Tielieketi Incident (Lake Zhalanashkol, 13 August 1969), as the focus for this book. This is an important episode of the Cold War that deserves greater exposure. This brief war marks a turning point between the two Communist giants and in one way or another, lays the foundation for international politics for the next fifty years. In 1972, China moved to the US/Western Camp by signing the Three Joint Communiques, normalising relations between the US and China and establishing a full diplomatic relationship in 1979 the rest is history. This all started with a shooting match in 1969. This book does not attempt to write history or point fingers at who is right and wrong. It merely attempts to allow the voices of the Chinese veterans to be heard; doing so will enable us to see with a 20/20 vision of what happened back in 1969. 98 b/w photographs, 13 b/w illustrations, 3 colour photos, 3 colour illustrations, 2 colour profiles, 11 maps This book details the period of the Sino-Soviet Border Battles between March 1969 and August 1969. Forces were restored and battle-hardened, war plans formulated, and attitudes evolved. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. From inception PAF was in the thick of things supporting ground troops in Kashmir, and later, two major wars ensued against India. This book covers the early years of Royal Pakistan Air Force, led by seconded Royal Air Force personnel, through to being led by Pakistani officers and based on the American approach to air operations. To say that the Pakistan Air Force has an eventful history would not be an overstatement. Right from inception it was in the thick of things supporting ground troops in Kashmir, while trying to stand on its own feet. Two major wars ensued in which it performed well against a numerically superior force. Eagles of Destiny covers the early years of Royal Pakistan Air Force, while still being led by seconded Royal Air Force personnel and operating under a British model, through to being led by Pakistani officers and its transformation into a first-rate tactical force based on the American approach to air operations. The acquisition of assets under British leadership and later via the American Mutual Defence Assistance Program are covered in detail as are the resulting changes in operational concepts. The major wars with India during 1965 and 1971 are also covered in detail, including the intervening period, where an American arms embargo brought in drastic changes and a flare for improvisation. Eagles of Destiny is based on extensive research conducted over more than 20 years, including interviewing large number of officers, many of whom shaped the events along with access to numerous British, American and Pakistani archives. Eagles of Destiny is illustrated by hundreds of unique photographs, some never published before, giving a visual treat and insight into those days. AUTHORS: Usman Shabbir was born in Pakistan in 1978 and after his early schooling at Lawrence College, completed his engineering education from IT University of Denmark. He is an avid aviation enthusiast with his primary focus on Asian air forces. He has contributed to numerous aviation publications over the years. Currently, he resides in Copenhagen, working for Deloitte as Manager. Yawar Mazhar was born in Pakistan and has worked in the corporate sector for all of his professional life. Military aviation and especially the history of the Pakistan Air Force has been a passion for him all through his life. Over years he has collected information on PAF's history and developments and in the process has met and interviewed dozens of PAF officers, most of whom were a key part of important developments of PAF. A fortunate introduction to Usman allowed both of them to start collaborating actively which led to earlier articles on PAF. His other interests include philosophy, history and Urdu poetry. 68 b/w photos, 21 colour profiles, 2 maps, 1 diagram, 10 tables The first detailed reconstruction of the built-up and operational history of the Pakistan Air Force based on official documentation.
