Growing up in the last years of Victoria's reign, Blower learns his trade in Suffolk, before being called up to the First World War and subsequently volunteering for the Second World War, and then ending up in the Highlands, in turn on a grouse shoot and then a deer estate. A detailed chronicle of the immense changes which took place in the period in rural Britain, much obviously taken directly from the author's own experiences. .

An extremely detailed look at preserving all manner of natural history specimens. The first volume, published in 1955, dealt with the preservation of invertebrates. This, the second and final volume, "embraces the preservation of fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals as well as botanical and geological material. In addition, special sections deal with casting reptiles and amphibians as well as the modelling of whales and the modelling and casting of relief maps." .
