Paperback. Condition: Very Good. According to the Government's nutritional standards, a child's lunch should contain at least one portion each of fruit and veg, protein (meat or alternative), dairy products and starchy food, such as bread or pasta. But a survey by the Food Standards Agency found that nine out of ten children still take packed lunches to school that contain too much saturated fat, sugar and salt. What a healthy lunch should consist of. What children and adults of different ages should have (size of portions etc). Seasonality. Variety. Encouraging children to experiment. Personalising your lunchbox and making your lunchbox special. How to adapt your lunchbox for different age groups. How to get over children's fears of being different. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. If you are told that you must follow a wheat, gluten or dairy free diet, where do you begin to work out what you can eat safely? One thing is for sure you will have to start cooking for yourself at home since there are very few ready meals available that will be suitable for your restricted diet. The simplest and safest course is to prepare your own meals, that way you will know for certain that your food does not include any hidden ingredients that might trigger your allergy or intolerance. Many people find cooking becomes a tyranny if they have to make family meals and then a small portion of allergy free food for one person. Simpler by far to prepare recipes that are delicious for the entire family. But if you have been used to relying on ready prepared meals you may not be a confident cook or you may not have a repertoire of dishes to rely on. This book will help you build up your confidence and encourage you to cook so often that you will become a stress-free cook. The recipes are smart, modern, international and anything but depriving by using alternative ingredients such as coconut milk and rice flour. There are also recipes for special occasions - from Christmas and birthdays to entertaining. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Good. Around one in 100 people in the UK are estimated to have coeliac disease, a medically diagnosed, life-long condition that results in a permanent intolerance to gluten. However, those with the skin condition known as dermatitis herpetiformis also need to eat gluten-free foods, as do those people who have an allergic reaction to wheat, though wheat intolerance is quite rare, typically only occurring in children, and may just be a temporary problem. Associated symptoms of wheat intolerance may include eczema and other skin irritations.Gluten is the protein that is found in a number of grains including wheat, barley and rye but some people with coeliac disease are also sensitive to oats. The only way people with these diseases can control the symptoms is by cutting gluten out of their diet permanently. Although this may at first seem drastic, there is still a wealth of wonderful food to be enjoyed. The biggest lifestyle change involves taking care when buying processed foods (even the slightest trace of gluten can make someone with coeliac disease ill) so the best way to ensure that you have eliminated gluten is to prepare food yourself from natural ingredients which you can do if you follow Jody Vassallo's delicious, inspiring collection of over 100 recipes in The Big Wheat & Gluten Free Cookbook.Jody has spent her career creating and styling recipes with some of the most successful cookery writers today, such as Bill Granger and Donna Hay, so you can be sure that her own recipes will be just as modern and tempting. She has developed great-tasting gluten-free recipes not only for everyday staples such as bread and pastry but for Christmas celebrations and parties too. So going on a gluten-free diet doesn't have to be boring and limited when you have delights such as chicken pesto wraps, carrot & walnut muffins or pizza melts to look forward to. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Three weeks after Stirling air gunner Doug Fry was reported missing over Germany his mother was still clinging to the vain hope that he was alive. Then a neighbour said she had seen him in the cinema just down the road. The airman and his crew had been filmed for a Bomber Command documentary shortly before they took off from Mildenhall to attack Remscheid. Three hours later four of the crew were killed, but it was another two months after she had also seen the poignant film that widowed mother of eight Winnie Fry knew her nineteen-year-old son, though wounded, was still alive. Lancaster pilot Victor Wood's aircraft arrived too early over Gelsenkirchen when the target was shrouded in darkness and the Main Force was miles behind. His 12 Squadron bomber was suddenly struck with terrifying force by flak and turned upsidedown. An engine was on fire, the unconscious mid-upper gunner, slumped in his turret, was being sprayed with petrol and their bomb-load had been struck by shrapnel. Could Vic Wood get his crew back to base safely? These are just two of twenty dramatic stories from Bomber Command by Mel Rolfe, which is contained in Bomber Boys. Night after night, the young men, some just out of school, went off on sorties, having pushed to the back of their minds the unpalatable awareness that they might never see another dawn. If death did not find them on the first few terrifying sorties they grew up very quickly in order to fight another day. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Vulcan, the second of the three V bombers built to guard the UK during the Cold War, has become an aviation icon like the Spitfire, its delta shape instantly recognisable as is the howling noise it makes when the engines are opened for take-off. Vulcan Boys is the first Vulcan book recounted completely first hand by the operators themselves. It tells the story of the aircraft from its design conception through the Cold War when it played out its most important job as Britains nuclear deterrent; before unbelievably, at the end of its service life, also playing a significant role, with its bombs and missiles, in liberating the Falkland Islands for which it gained much celebrity. The individual accounts detail how hours at a time were spent on readiness, waiting to be scrambled to defend their country in the event of a third world war. In addition how their aggressive skills were honed by carrying out Lone Ranger sorties flying to the States and westward around the world, and taking part in Giant Voice and Red Flag, competitive exercises against the United States Strategic Air Command. The attacks in the Falklands using Shrike missiles are described accurately and in great detail for the first time including the landing at Rio de Janeiro alongside a vivid account of Black Buck 2. Vulcan Boys is a fascinating and completely authentic read reminding us of the Cold War, how it was fought and the considerable effort required to prevent all-out nuclear war. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The day after D-Day, the most momentous day of the Second World War, Frank Holland was an RAF pilot whose Typhoon aircraft had just been hit by German anti-aircraft fire during a low flying attack on a marshaling yard in Normandy. He managed to take the aircraft up to 1200 feet but then the engine went dead and his Typhoon soon began heading towards the earth at an accelerating and frightening speed. Struggling frantically, he just barely got free of the cockpit and baled out four or five seconds before the crash. His parachute didn't open but he fell into a wood, crashing through the branches of an oak to dangle precariously fifteen feet up. Breathing hard, he experienced a few seconds of relief at survival. But then he realized German troops would be swarming around within minutes. He had to get away, and fast - So begins Frank's tremendous adventure as he evaded capture for months, sometimes by barely a whisker, to make it back home to the city of his birth, Cambridge. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Leslie Illingworth was one of the most distinguished British political cartoonists of the 20th century and remains for many 'the cartoonists' cartoonist. Yet though his career spanned more than 50 years - longer than either of his great contemporaries Sir David Low and Vicky - very little has been published about his life and works. Some of Illingworth's best cartoons were published for the "Daily Mail" during the Second World War (examples were even found in Hitler's bunker) and this book collects together for the first time 100 of his greatest to mark the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict. Illingworth joined the "Daily Mail" soon after the war started, and remained with the paper for 30 years. A superb draughtsman and an acute political commentator, he also drew weekly for "Punch" for two decades. The magazine's editor Malcolm Muggeridge even felt that his cartoons were better than Low's: 'Illingworth's go deeper, becoming, at their best, satire in the grand style rather than mischievous quips'. A student under Sir William Rothenstein at the Royal College of Art during one of its most brilliant periods - fellow students included Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Eric Ravilious - he left to become full-time political cartoonist on Wales' national paper, the Western Mail, at the age of only 19. A founding member and the first President of the British Cartoonists' Association in 1966, he was made an Honorary Doctor of Literature by the University of Kent in 1975. In addition he drew for American publications - including a famous cover for "Time" magazine - and was officially presented to US President L.B. Johnson in 1968. This unique collection is divided into chapters covering the war year-by-year and the book draws extensively on archive material held at the National Library of Wales and only recently catalogued in association with the British Cartoon Archive at the University of Kent. It also contains the first biography of Illingworth based on unique access to hitherto unavailable family records. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Though the word vegetarianism was not coined until the mid-nineteenth century, the vegetarian diet has been around as long as man has. Vegetarians have included in their number: heretics, humanists, Hindus, Christian fundamentalists, radicals, agnostics, philosophers, founders of religion and even an Emperor. Not surprisingly vegetarians have often been discriminated against sometimes tortured, even killed for their beliefs. So the history of vegetarianism is also a history of dissidence and revolt. Colin Spencers comprehensive book, reissued in paperback for the first time in fifteen years explores the psychology of abstention from flesh and attempts to discover why omnivorous humans at times voluntarily abstain from an available food. The result is a thorough work of scholarship, entertaining in places, horrifying in others. The breadth of Spencers research is quite outstanding and makes for a truly erudite read. He begins in pre-history and ends in the present day. Colin Spencer is one of the countrys leading food historians but his prolific output has not been limited to this field alone. He has written nine novels, a dozen cookery books, has had six plays produced, as well as writing for television and film and was food columnist for The Guardian for thirteen years. He has also written two other Grub Street titles: British Food (9781908117038) and From Microliths to Microwaves (9781908117007). The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Over the last 75 years there have been numerous books and articles written about Baron Manfred von Richthofen, Germany's highest scoring fighter ace of World War I, not only about his life, but also of his death. This book deals with the men he shot down. Aviation historian and writer Norman Franks, has combined his knowledge and skills with military historians Hal Gilbin and Nigel McCrery to produce an up-to-date reference book covering the 123 men von Richthofen is reputed to have brought down while amassing his score of 80 victories over Allied aircraft between September 1916 and April 1918. Here, completed backgrounds of the men he fought and accounted for in the air battle are documented. The later lives of those who survived the encounter with the Red Baron are also reported. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Distant Thunder details the engrossing experiences of a helicopter pilot's tales of war told through letters that come straight from the heart. Often the author laboured well into the night after a mission still wearing the dusty flight suit which bore witness to the events he penned. Don Harward was torn between two worlds; his loyalty to his family and to his country. Like so many other soldiers, even on leave, he can always hear the dim roar of guns, the distant thunder of war, and is always summoned towards the sound. Pacific Wings, a prestigious New Zealand-based magazine, has previously published some letters which have been praised by a growing readership, both aviator and non flyer alike, for their ability to transport the reader into the world of war. Includes superb action photographs from Don's personal collection. An inspiring read. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
