Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. the book is a movingly frank account by his daughter Diana, of growing up amidst abundant love and precarious finances, at times descending into genuine poverty. The book vividly conveys a very real picture of day- to- day life in the St. Ives of that time, and the poetry CD with Arthur Caddick's own voice, recaptures many carefree evenings. Illustrated with some photographs, poetry and drawings. In almost as new condition and the CD does not appear to have been played. SIGNED by Diana Calvert Size - 242mm. x165mm.(8vo.). Pp.136. Signed by Author(s).

Second edition. 8vo. (vi), 246, (4) pp. Publisher's red cloth, gilt lettered to the spine and decorated to the upper board, dust jacket. Illustrations by the author throughout. An excellent copy. A cult novel, being a barely fictionalised description of the petty rivalries and squabbles within the artists' community in St. Ives. The book provoked much consternation locally and prompted a libel action leading to the book's early withdrawal from sale. First published in 1962, this is the sole reprint and benefits from the author's glossary of terms and real names hitherto unpublished. Neither edition is common.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Sven Berlin (illustrator). Second Edition. First impression of the second edition. Illustrated with eight pages of colour photographs, and black and white drawings in the text by Sven Berlin. ***Fine in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, and large gilt monogram design to front board. Boards bright and clean. No bumps. No creases. Internally fine with no inscriptions. Pages bright and clean. Spine tight. ***In a fine illustrated dustwrapper. No chips. No tears. No creases. Dustwrapper crisp and bright. ***242mm x 158mm. 246 pages plus a three-page author's key to the characters - never before published to the rear. ***'"The Dark Monarch - a Portrait from Within" is a lightly-disguised depiction of life in the 1950's heyday of the St Ives Art Colony by the Sea. Clearly identifiable, with or without the author's key, here published for the first time, are the painters, sculptors and potters, many of them household names today. Their posturing, petty vanities, quarrels, amours, eccentricities and kindness are surely, if light-heartedly, observed and exposed. Against this background, we follow the life of the author himself. Returning from war service to learn that his wife has betrayed him, he finds - then most tragically loses - new love. All the while, he and his peers re-engaged in a frenzy of creative activity - painting, poetry, printing, sculpture, all endlessly and emotionally debated. ***First published in 1962, the book was withdrawn within weeks after legal action. It is now republished with new commentary and colour illustrations.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***First impression of the second edition, in its original dustwrapper, in very fine, bright, crisp condition, printed on quality paper. Of interest to collectors of Sven Berlin and the St. Ives colony of artists. This second edition is also very hard to find. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
