This volume (Teil II/ Volume II) was published on 5th September 1941 in Berlin and was the 3rd Edition presumably updated from those issued earlier in 1941. German text. This is effectively a collection of very high quality coloured maps and outstanding aerial photographic views of the key Ukrainian cities and towns, including Charkow, Kiew (Kiev), Ssewastopol (Sevastopol), etc, etc. There are 18 maps and plans called for and ALL are present. The separate town plans book contains c.87 coloured street plans. There is also an additional publication mapping in colour the mineral deposits of the Soviet Union. The maps and plans are contained in a khaki coloured box as illustrated which indicates that the publication was to be kept secure. This is a very rare publication (we have never had this particular volume previously) with this volume complete and in excellent condition. Ships from UK.

Important and unusual autobiographical account of an Englishman, Lieutenant of Artillery on the Field Staff (Southern Army) with a very detailed account of his experiences through many of the key American Civil War battles, ie Bull Run, Leesburg, Millsprings, Shenandoah Valley, Willamsburg, Vhickahominy, Cross Keys, Richmond, Manassas, Antietam, etc. The author's comments are often controversial but are very interesting in that they reflect the attitudes of the time from the southern point of view. Volume 1 339pp., folding plans, Volume II, 399pp., folding plans. Both volumes in original maroon cloth, gilt, some modest uneven fading and a few blemishes, else remarkably well preserved. Particularly significant is a signed presentation inscription at the top of the title page in both volumes to a Mrs M. Lockhart "With the very best wishes of her humble Lieut the author Thos E. Caffrey" (Note the signature is not entirely clear.) Possibly unique signed example of the two volume London Edition providing a source reference on the Southern experience of war. Ships from UK. Handwritten signed presentation inscription from the Corps Commander General Richard O'Connor to the well known author Arthur Bryant. The inscription explains how (Bryants) writings meant "so much to me during my captivity".General O'Connor, the then highly successful desert commander was spectacularly captured by a German reconnaissance patrol in the desert in 1941 and until his escape in late 1943 spent his time in an Italian POW camp. He returned to England and commanded a full Corps from 1944 until the wars end. Copies of this book are exceptionally rare, and to find one in a dustwrapper with the ultimate inscription from Sir Richard, the Corps Commander, who himself had a larger than life story to tell, makes it unique. All the bindings are in exceptionally nice condition. The most sumptuous and expensive bindings produced for the history and to find all four in matching bindings in at least very good+ condition is very rare. Obviously a very heavy set.

The letters start on May 21st 1915 with a description of his arrival in the trenches, a number of Officers named and interpreter Philippe. Letter (II) The guns were very busy all yesterday and at night one sees the shell flashes like summer lightning, otherwise there is no war beyond rumours of a spy shot here and there" and later 21 June " I see they gave our attack the big headlines in the papers- as I wrote last under spasmodic shelling I forgot many details. Prisoners returning under escort in the heat of the day-bearheaded, sweating, muddied grey. there would have been more.a few got what they tried to avoid by surrender". Back in town "back to back with arms tied to the wheel spokes two British defaulters . under Field Imprisonment no.1". 23rd June. "much discussed Cpl Rabbetts died the day after he was hit, small wonder as it went through the brain. but he is a serious loss" 26 June " Tonight we are due to dig . in the newly captured German trenches which ought to be good fun" On July 7th there is a detailed description of a "Minny" plump in the trench, two men were killed and two wounded. Copies of telegrams indicate that he was killed in action July 30th and this is supported by "His Colonel's letter" describing his death and mentioning the loss of 52 officers and a very large number of men. Another handwritten letter dated August 13 from a "family friend " Archibald Don with the 10th Black Watch and at that time in the UK comments on how "really first rate" are the letters etc. c.175pp., and clearly typed with some handwritten corrections at the time. Important and very fluent record of a young man at war and the waste of a life.

Important account by one of the founding fathers of Britsh sniping, with much on the challenges facing British snipers and the way they were overcome in WWI, 1st Edition 1921, Privately published at Oxford. 141pp., sketches, photographs, xxxviii appendices. A few minor blemishes else very good condition. This copy initialled by Crum was presented on 17.3.40 to N.B.G. This was Captain Nicholas Barcham Green commissioned as a 2nd Lieut with the 8th Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment in September 1914, wounded in Belgium in September 1916 and again in June 1916, following his recovery he trained Officer cadets at Membland Hall in Devon. Apparently he knew Crum and during the second world war met him again and was given this book. The book remained in the family and was recently acquired from his grandson, together with a precis of both his wartime and private career, he died in 2012. A rare item with an interesting presentation inscription. Signed by Author(s).
