Item Description: Mt. Baldy Publishing Company, United States, 2014. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 198 x 198 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. A Fawn near the Road is intended for children between 3 and 9. It s the story of the Fawn s first outing--a trip to the river. Momma deer uses it as an opportunity to teach some life lessons, but the Fawn thinks it s just one big adventure. They re able to cross the road safely by carefully avoiding the angry ones. Then he learns how to jump but isn t very good at it. At the river, the Fawn meets his cousins and has even greater adventures. One adventure includes the ignoring of a parent s warning, consequences of actions, and ultimately doing the right thing. There are 27 pages of story text, including nine adorable illustrations by nine children from grades 4 through 8. An additional illustration by another child is on the front cover. The children also drew self-portraits which are included on the back cover. This book provides fun fiction with educational value. After chapters 1 and 3 are Questions for Children. These are designed to enhance understanding and comprehension, and to develop a child s ability to think about implications and consequences in the story. The questions also help a child with transformational thinking and decision making skills. All questions are neutral and there are no wrong answers. Young children will enjoy this book of fiction fused with subtle education and values. And they will absolutely love the illustrations drawn by children! Reviews: A Fawn near the Road tells the story of adventure through the life experience of a curious child-The Fawn. This interactive book teaches (and reminds) us of leadership, courage, trust and playfulness when learning new life experiences. I appreciate Tracy Sulkin s use of children s art-this enhances the reader s ability to envision the story with vivid imagery and encourages our youth to support the beauty of art and story-telling. Enrique (Henry) Horta was born the third child of the Horta Family in Ventura California. He grew up in other cities such as, Los Angeles, Watsonville, Cucamonga and San Diego. While spending some of his teen years in Mexico he learned about survival and the importance of appreciating and doing the best of what resources he had. When he returned to California he was a skinny kid with dreams and plans to be a Pilot, traveler and adventurer. His wild dreams of becoming an Astronaut and going to the moon where replaced by more realistic dreams such as wanting to become an Airline Pilot. When he turned 18 years old, he parted from his parents and had to join the working rat race starting out as a bag-boy at a local Safeway store. His plans to finish College were halted by his travelling bug so he took a break from school, sold his motorcycle, and went back-packing to Europe with only $1,000.00 Dollars in his pocket, a Euro-Pass train Ticket for a month, and a return airplane ticket home. Fatherhood in Germany at a young age made him become more responsible and serious about his dreams. He didn t return alone to California and was now a young family man while working as a carpenter in construction and attending evening University and Flight School on weekends. His hard work, scholarships, grants, and student loans paid off and he graduated with an Airway Science Degree in addition to all his Pilot ratings and Certificates. Despite his parents divorce in 2001, he s doing just fine, having chosen to live with his richly successful father in Newport Beach, California. Even s older brother Gabe continues to live in Cucamonga with their emotionally unstable mother. Though he feels discarded and left behind, Gabe visits Even and their father on the weekends. Even doesn t seem too worried about Gabe s quick-to-ignite temper or his evolving addiction to skipping school and smoking weed. Item Description: Turner Publishing Company, United States, 2006. Hardback. Book Condition: New. 236 x 165 mm. Language: English Brand New Book. A dramatic look from the front lines at the most devastating fire siege in California history With over seven miles of urban/wildland interface unburned for thirty years and beautiful homes lacing in and out of its picturesque hilly terrain, Rancho Cucamonga was a powder keg--one that finally exploded in October 2003 with a ferocity no one could have expected. Now, Erich Krauss brings you to the ever-shifting front lines of the battle against the catastrophic inferno, the rugged terrain, and the ferocious winds, where municipal and wildland firefighters joined forces to save thousands of homes and lives. Wall of Flame recalls the unprecedented events surrounding the Grand Prix Fire, revealing the moments of apparent indecision, the lack of coordination, and even how local, state, and federal firefighters--each with missions that at times opposed one another--put their differences aside for the greater good in order to save Southern California. With each passing hour, the fire grew larger and their task more immense. Mistakes were made. Plans collapsed. Even the most seasoned firefighters felt the world close in. But they persevered. After all, it was their city, their homes, and their loved ones they were entrusted to protect. Their community was counting on them to save their homes and all the history they had wrapped up in them. This was a battle they could not afford to lose. Bookseller Inventory # AAS9780471696568

This is the story of my life as a child growing up with a pioneer Mother. My mother, Dixie Smith was a unique woman who taught her children the gift of never giving up. Dixie and the Kids tells the story of how we moved to Oregon and built our own log cabin, how we made ends meet, and how we loved and laughed along the way. The story is told through the eyes of my family members and of our many animals, however, the memories are mine. We were referred to by friends, neighbors and family as Dixie and the Kids, and we were a true team. This story is a tribute to my other teammates: Dixie, Ronald and Eugene. Donnale Harp currently lives in Rancho Cucamonga, California, just a stones throw away from where she was born in San Dimas. She has come full circle by returning to her birthplace. Item Description: Dorrance Publishing Co., United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Tragic intensity and stories of beauty, love, and hope are the hallmarks of The Winds of Time, an intense fusion of fiction, memoir, and literary prose that presents a stirring, historical portrait of the Great Depression. Life during the Great Depression was often overshadowed by poverty and displaced families. Betty Reed, known as Jeanie, was part of a vagabond family who left their home in the Ozarks to make their way to the migrant farms of California and the mining camps of Nevada and Colorado. As Reed put it: she was the migrant farm child at the Lucas Ranch, Cucamonga, California; the miner s daughter at Boulder Dam; a child of the desert in Mina, Nevada; the country girl from the Ozarks; and the unwelcome step-child in Antonito, Colorado. And her journeys, challenges, and triumphs, so beautifully illustrated, are part of the amazing journey that would take her from the hills of the Ozarks to Canyon de Chelly and beyond, finally allowing her destiny to lead her to her descendants of the lost Island of Atlantis. From the building of the Hoover Dam to stories of the mining camps in the Southwest and of the migrants who traveled from Arkansas in search of opportunity and promises in California, Reed s story presents poignant vignettes of people and of survival, amidst the greatest odds. Betty Reed was born in Lincoln, Arkansas, during the Great Depression. The Winds of Time is largely autobiographical, detailing her life during the Great Depression and her travels through Arkansas, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado. Her mother, Syble, left five-year-old Reed in Mina, Nevada, and returned home to Arkansas. Reed graduated from high school in Ontario, California, in 1950. She married and moved to Texas, where she and her husband had four children. Reed eventually returned to school, where she earned her R.N. and a B.S. in psychology with a minor in English literature. She is also the author of Alfie the Armadillo, a children s book. Bookseller Inventory # APC9781480910607
