Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Wickett, William and Nicholas Duval. The farmer's boy : the story of a Suffolk poet, Robert Bloomfield, his life and poems 1766 - 1823. First edition. Lavenham: Terence Dalton, 1971. Hardback, VG, in unclipped dustjacket, a little sunned to spine, with minor shelfwear and rubbing to edges. Tan cloth with gilt lettering to spine. 144pp., b/w plates and illustratiuons. Chapter head illustrations from engravings in an early edition of The Farmer's Boy. Contents clean and bright. Robert Bloomfield (3 December 1766 19 August 1823) was an English labouring-class poet, whose work is appreciated in the context of other self-educated writers, such as Stephen Duck, Mary Collier and John Clare. The poem that made his reputation, The Farmer's Boy, was composed in a garret in Bell Alley, Coleman Street. It was influenced by James Thomson's poem The Seasons. Bloomfield was able to carry in his head some fifty to a hundred finished lines of it at a time, until an opportunity arose to write them down. The manuscript was declined by several publishers and was eventually shown by his brother George to Capel Lofft, a radical Suffolk squire of literary tastes, who arranged for its publication with woodcuts by Thomas Bewick in 1800. The success of The Farmer's Boy was remarkable, over 25,000 copies being sold in the next two years. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. THE FARMER'S BOY The Story of a Suffolk Poet. William Wickett and Nicholas Duval. Terence Dalton Ltd., Lavenham 1971 First edition ISBN 090096328X 144pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is in fine unmarked condition in an unclipped dust wrapper that is sunned to the spine and has one or two rubs but is entire. Robert Bloomfield (1766-1823) was the most successful of the self-taught 'peasant poets' of the Romantic period. His first book, The Farmer's Boy (1800), sold 26,000 copies and went through seven editions within three years of publication. Admired by Wordsworth and John Clare, who called Bloomfield 'our English Theocritus', Bloomfield's poetry fell out of favour in the twentieth-century, though recent years have seen a revival of popular and academic interest in his life and works.
