Slight spotting to top edge, else very good in dust-wrapper. Fred Rolfe was the 'King of the Norfolk Poachers'. From the time when, as a child, he went to prison and the tread-mill for snaring a rabbit, he lived "agin the law." Rolfe began poaching in boyhood and, despite trying other jobs, including gamekeeping, continued his illegal career with increasing relish. He wrote I Walked by Night in old age, recording the lives of many tough, fascinating characters struggling to survive in an era of rural hardship. .

Lilias Margitson Rider Haggard, MBE (9 December 1892 9 January 1968) was the fourth and youngest child of the British writer Sir Henry Rider Haggard and Mariana Louisa Margitson. She was a member of Norfolk County Council from 1949 to 1952 and in 1953 was elected president of the Norfolk Rural Craftsmen's Guild. She wrote a number of books, including a biography of her father entitled The Cloak That I Left. Her book Norfolk Life, based on columns she wrote for the Eastern Daily Press, contains an introduction by Henry Williamson. Edward Brian Seago, RBA, ARWS, RWS (31 March 1910 19 January 1974) was an English artist who painted in both oils and watercolours. Hardback Edition. xv+182 pp., brown cloth in vg dj protected by plastic wrapper, excellent condition with bookplates of Dennis Sellers and Dr Arthur Raistrick academic of Newcastle University, 12 full page drawings and numerous text illus. by Edward Seago. Diary and memoirs of a famous Norfolk written in his old age and edited by a lady whose father regularly saw the poacher before his court! This copy is unique with the bookplate and signature of Raistrick on front endpapers, and his signed annotations mainly in chapter 4. Rolfe was in prison for poaching and Raistrick was imprisoned in WWI as a conscientious objector. He went through and annotated in detail what Rolfe recalled of his Norwich jail experiences. Raistrick [1896-1991] was an academic polymath became a Quaker, disliked honours and rewards and turned down one from Harold Wilson, his fellow Socialist. Size: 8vo. Association Copy.
