Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. A very unusual book, written by an art historian and published by an art & architecture publisher. The book is sort of a photo album/scrapbook, but for the Jews in America as a whole, rather than for a particular family. Divided into chapters for five chronological periods, each chapter illustrates the themes of that period with a collection of photographs, documents, paintings and drawings, and brief text summarizing the period. For example, in the first chapter, "A Few Among the First Settlers 1654-1819," some of the items include Peter Stuyvesant's letter to his employers in Amsterdam complaining about the recently arrived Jewish settlers; numerous paintings and etchings of early New York, Savannah, Newport and other early Jewish communities; paintings of prominent Jews of the period; a tombstone rubbing of the grave of Rebecca Polock of Newport, Rhode Island (d. 1764); a page from the circumcision book of Barnard Itzhak Jacobs (ca. 1765); a copy of the second oldest ketubah produced in the United States (Solomon Myers-Cohen and Belah Simon, 10 Feb 1779); a photograph of the family genealogy of Samuel Beals and Rebekah Wilkerson; a page from a Philadelphia newspaper with advertisements from several Jewish merchants; and countless other fascinating items. Each chapter is richly and lavishly illustrated with equally interesting documents and illustrations. Oversized (13 inches). 342 pages, index & bibliography. Dust jacket in Brodart cover. In very good condition, although spine is slightly cocked.
