Francis Warrington Dawson (born Joseph Austin Reek in London in 1840) emigrated to the United States in 1861 on the CSA steamer Nashville in order to join the Confederate service. He soon decided agiant naval service and enlisted in the artillery and was promoted to the rank of captain in April, 1864. After the war he remained in the South and became a journalist and newspaper publisher.

Dawson utilizes his skill as a journalist to write descriptions of his experiences on the blockade runner Nashville, with the Army of Northern Virginia, and as a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware. He gives an eyewitness account of the wounding of General James Longstreet and of major battles, including Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. After the war Dawson became an American citizen and editor of Charleston's News and Courier. Very good copy of the hard cover book with no dust jacket. 214 pages.
