George Frederick Will (born May 4, 1941) is an American political commentator. George Will writes regular columns for The Washington Post and provides commentary for NBC News and MSNBC. In 1986, The Wall Street Journal called him "perhaps the most powerful journalist in America", in a league with Walter Lippmann (1889-1974). His numerous awards include the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1977. Will served as an editor for National Review from 1972 to 1978. He joined The Washington Post Writers Group in 1974, writing a syndicated biweekly column, which became widely circulated among newspapers across the country and continues today. His column is syndicated to 450 newspapers. In 1976 he became a contributing editor for Newsweek, writing a biweekly backpage column until 2011. From 2013-17, Will was a contributor for Fox News. In 2017, Will was announced as an MSNBC and NBC News political contributor. Derived from a Kirkus review: Here are two snappy, broad-ranging pep talks--one for Republicans needing to leave the shadow of Reagan, and one for Democrats needing to leave the shadow of defeat. Popular columnist Will rates Reagan as one of the century's five "permeating presidents" who dominated public life. Reagan has been an ardent party builder; Republicans may have a long run as our "natural" party. Their challenge is to face down the Soviets and to resolve the one Reagan curse, the budget deficit. His best ideas come by way of popularizing the work of political-science theorists and analysts on various topics. Will first shoves the Democrats through a propeller blade of statistics on their recent runs for the White House, then advises a return to Cold War Liberalism and a "no" to affirmative action politics. Will can't write a dull or unprovocative page, and this enthusiastic send-off may be just what the current race of no-names (and Bush) needs.
