A facsimile reprint of Volume 1 of The Rail Road Book of England by Edward Churton originally published in 1851. This first volume contains all routes from London. The book describes exactly what the traveller could see from the railway train on any route that he or she might travel. It is arranged by lines giving the exact distances between stations. The reader is in all cases supposed to be sitting with their face towards the engine, the inside marginal columns representing the "line", the left page showing the objects found to the left, the right page those to the right. The Rail Road Book of England is lavishly illustrated with line drawings and has a large pull-out map of the railways of England, Scotland and Wales, as they were in 1851. There is a full index and also a table of routes from London. This book is not only of interest to railway enthusiasts. It is also a fascinating guide book providing a unique glimpse of England in the mid nineteenth century, its cities, towns, villages, stately homes, architecture, and topography. Anyone travelling today on the lines the book describes will find it a most rewarding companion. Ref III 7.
