Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. John Murray first started publishing Napier's mammoth history of the Peninsula War in 1828, this is a first impression of this new facsimile edition of 1993. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very very slightly bruised, not price clipped (£22.50), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 622pp. An unabridged re issue of William Napier's magisterial classic eyewitness account. A prime source for the epic struggle between Britain and her allies against the French occupation of Spain and Portugal. Napier (1785-1860), a son of Lady Sarah Lennox and her second husband Col. George Napier, fought all through the Peninsula War campaign. He retreated with Moore to Corunna, made the forced march to Talavera, took part in the storming of Badajoz, commanded his regiment at Salamanca and was with the army at the battles of Orthes and Toulouse in France. After Waterloo Napier was with the Army of Occupation in France, returning in 1819, when he retired on half pay.
