Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. First American Edition. 224pp., xvi. Stated: "First Published in the United States in 1964" with NAP. Appendix, The Interview Schedule, pp. 215-219; Index, pp. 221-224. Eight pages of glossy black and white, lovely, Period photo-illustrations of the Universities and students at study and at play. No jacket. Red cloth with still brilliant gilt lettering on spine; top edge stained black (now more charcoal). Nugatory, very faint liquid spill stain on front cover, roughly (irregular edges) down most of the right third of front cover along right edge, BUT consists in mere elimination of the red SHEEN of cloth, NOT in discoloration or waviness of red, so can primarily be seen only when "the light is just right", NOT a glaring distraction (similar, but lesser in amount and effect, on rear cover down right side of rear cover); faint foxing/paste-down shadows on endpapers; two 1/2" smudges on rear cover and black ink lines at rear cover bottom left corner and along part of very lower edges and rear covere top edge (perhaps related to procedure of top edge publisher staining): describes so much worse then it is, but there you have it. Solid copy: tight binding, sharp corners, no previous owner names. Clean text. Representative excerpts: "This study is based on a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative observation, following the principles adopted in my earlier studies" (p.1). "So individual psychology is basically social psychology. . . I think I involuntarily stumbled upon something very important which would be a correction to the usual classification of types in modern psychology" (p. 153). "An interesting instance of class diffidence was met in a few who came from a working-class background. As one student said: 'I took over the parental diffidence.' Another student: "I am diffident, owing to my working-class background.' The working-class lad is not so sure of himself in the company of those whom he regards as 'higher up'. One of these made a general and sweeping statement: 'The working-class family restricts you in outlook, it makes you think that you are somewhat inferior, and that you shouldn't go out for the highest and best. I feel that other people are better than me' (pp. 156f). "There is little doubt that the general body of opinion is for tolerance, sympathetic understanding and seeing other people's viewpoint. To be ready for compromise is regarded as a national virtue of first importance. The British genius for compromise comes out quite clearly in students' pronouncements" (p. 181).
