Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Published by George Allen and Unwin Ltd in 1942, this is the 1st edition (2nd impression December printing) of Wu Ch'eng-en's MONKEY, Translated by Arthur Waley. Orange cloth binding, green lettering, 305 pages, and a title page designed by Duncan Grant, the book is in poor to fair condition and has general musty staining to the cloth binding and to the end papers and pastedowns. The rest of the book appears good. The original un-clipped, vibrant Duncan Grant dust jacket has been protected by a mylar sheet and by a paper insert and is in relatively free of staining and in fair condition with top edge chipping leading to a very small area of loss at the top of the spine, plus some general areas of chipping and occasional creasing, plus a closed tear near the top of the spine. There is also a clear tape repair to the inside of the jacket, again to the spine, along the entire length which is quite difficult to spot at first glance. This was lower grade paper used during the war so in the case of typical dust jackets of the time, they were prone to tear far more easily than later incarnations. A revered rarity, but in far from perfect condition.
