Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Colin Paynton (illustrator). 37x22cm, 100pp. With over thirty wood engravings by Colin Paynton printed directly from the blocks in black, yellow, red and blue. Copy 239 of 280 (300), signed by Colin Paynton, quarter-bound in scarlet leather over grey paper-covered boards by Zaehnsdorf, gilt rule, gilt titling and press device to spine, t.e.g., in a grey cloth-covered slipcase. A major and much sought-after Gwasg Gregynog production - generally regarded as the magnum opus from the early years of the Press. The engravings, with multi-coloured borders of various patterns, are integrated into the text and appear as jewel-like highlights. In the best Gwasg Gregynog tradition, the 'Giraldus' is a most scholarly edition - it is based on Sir Richard Colt Hoare's 1806 translation edited by Dr Brynley F Roberts, who also introduces the work and discusses the intentions of the author and the strengths and weaknesses of the translation. Near Fine (the slightest sunning to the backstrip as often seen), in a Near Fine slipcase (a few scattered tiny spots to the cloth). Esslemont & Hughes 20. Signed by Illustrator(s).
