Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 6th Impression. Hardback. Old Men Forget. Foxing to end inside covers. Previous owners names and date to inside cover. Wear and tear to edges of D/J. Browning to spine and edges of D/J. Price clipped. In this book Lord Norwich, better known as Duff Cooper, tells with commendable brevity the story of his life. His childhood, his education at Eton, Oxford and abroad, his work in the Foreigh Office, his military service in the Foreign Office, his military service in the First World War, twenty years in the House of Commons - where he helf the offices of Financial Secretary to the War Office and Treasury, Secretary of State for War, First Lord of the Admiralty, Minister of Information and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, all come under review, and the book closed with the end of his last appointment, that of British Ambassador in Paris in 1947. The writer has succeeded in recounting this very full life in a manner calculated not to weary the reader with unwanted information or to leave him with the impression that anything has been concealed. Illustrated. 400 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Both letters in good condition, lightly aged. Both signed 'Duff Cooper' and the first addressed to 'Thomas Earp, Esq., / Kitcombe House, / Newton Valence, / Alton, / Hants.' ONE: TLS, 9 January 1952. 1p, 12mo. He will try to get hold of a copy of 'Voyage de Shakespeare' and is glad Earp liked his 'little book on the same subject'. In an autograph postscript he writes: 'I suppose you have tried the London Library.' TWO: ALS, 11 April 1952. 2pp, 12mo. He has found 'Le Voyage de Shakespeare' but has lost Earp's address, so is writing to him care of the Daily Telegraph, 'in which I sometimes have the pleasure of reading your contributions'. The book is 'an expensive two volume edition brought out by Le Nouvelle France during the occupation. It is decorated by elaborate woodcuts which have little bearing on the text. [.] It is a curious book - well written.' If the London Library did not produce it as he suggested, he will be glad to send his copy to Earp. 'It would be better still if you would come to get it. Surely you visit Paris sometimes. When you do we should be delighted to see you here.'.

Published by On letterhead of The Special Secretariat Ministry of Information Malet Street London W.C.1. 2 August, 1940
2pp, 8vo. On a single leaf. In fair condition, aged, worn and creased, with one short closed tear. Folded twice. A Ministry of Information publicity document, with facsimile signature 'Duff Cooper', beginning: 'Dear Sir, | An article which appeared in the most prominent place in one of our most widely-circulated daily newspapers a few days ago contained the following sentence as a comment on the appointment of the Controller of Overseas Publicity in the Ministry of Information: | "What difference" said the writer "there can be between 'Overseas Publicity' and 'Foreign Publicity' must rest secretly in the Ministry, since we are an island." | Apparently the writer had for the moment forgotten the existence of the Dominions, India and the Colonial Empire.' The aim of the document is to 'remind people what an astounding achievement the British Commonwealth of Nations is'. Cooper points out that 'Eire [] has decided not to take part in the war; and no attempt has been made to compel her to take part, however much we may desire it.' He considers the Commonwealth 'a league of nations that has worked and has succeeded' In contrast, 'Hitler is attempting to unite Europe by force by taking away everybody's freedom and compelling them to obey the will of one nation, while that nation obeys the will of one man.' He concludes, in words that will find resonance with pro-Europeans: 'We, when the war is over, must also hope to see some unity in Europe, but a unity based upon the free will and consent of the various nations who will pool their resources, share their responsibilities and combine their armed forces while retaining their own liberty, just as the nations have done who form to-day the British Commonwealth.'
