Condition: Fair. 1934. First Edition Thus. 256 pages. No dust jacket. Red cloth. Contains colour illustrated frontispiece. Pages are lightly tanned and foxed, but text remains clear. Binding is firm. Prize plate stuck to front free endpaper. Tear to same page. Boards have light shelf-wear, with minor corner bumping and minimal scuffing to edges. Spine is slightly sunned, with noticeable crease and light crushing to ends. Small split to tail also. Moderate rubbing and scuffing overall, with a few marks also. Book has a noticeable forward lean.

Pages are lightly tanned and foxed throughout. Heavy cracking to gutters of a few pages with exposed binding. Previous owner's inscription to front pastedown. Heavy racking to hinges with exposed binding, causing boards to be loose. Plates are detached but remain present. Binding is slightly shaky. Boards have moderate edge wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Crushing to spine ends with small splits and fraying to cloth. Mild sunning to spine and edges. Scuffing and light marking overall. White marking to rear board.

Three full page illustrations, small vignette on title page, 2 small maps. An abridged edition for younger readers, ages 10 to 12. Escott-Inman's original work was a novel, based on the true story of a shipwreck on the Auckland Islands (one of New Zealand's groups of subantarctic islands) in 1907. Twelve lives were lost in the wreck, and fifteen survivors had to fend for themselves on Disappointment Island for eight months until their rescue.
