Condition: Gut. 251 S.; sehr zahlreiche Fotografien u. Abb. Gutes Ex.; Umschl. etwas berieben. - Italienisch. // INHALT : PREMESSA, Enrico Guidoni -- PRESENTAZIONE, Geneviève Calame-Griaule -- TOGU NA, STRUTTURA FONDAMENTO DELLA COMUNITÀ -- I VILLAGGI Altopiano Fascia rocciosa Pianura -- BIBLIOGRAFIA INDICE ANALITICO. (Verlagstext) // The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of the country of Mali, in Western Africa, south of the Niger bend, near the city of Bandiagara, in the Mopti region. The population numbers between 400,000 and 800,000. The Dogon are best known for their religious traditions, their mask dances, wooden sculpture and their architecture. The past century has seen significant changes in the social organization, material culture and beliefs of the Dogon, partly because Dogon country is one of Mali's major tourist attractions. Hardcover. Condition: As New. GIFT QUALITY, UNCOMMON 1977 oversized hardcover with dust jacket. Well-preserved UNREAD COPY is bright and clean inside and out, with minimal shelf-rubbing to the face of the dust jacket only. Gorgeous copy! This is the U.S. edition published by Rizzoli. "One thousand years ago, the African Dogon escaped persecution from neighboring tribes by building their habitats on the inaccessible cliffs of Bandiagara in Mali. They remained isolated for centuries, but eventually were forced out of isolation by a succession of ethnographic expeditions. As this book's dramatic photographs illustrate, Dogon architecture, mythology and ancestral rites are not only closely linked but provide an effective substitute for the Dogon's lack of writing. The best example is the TOGU NA, the beautifully decorated chief construction of every Dogon village, in which the elders meet to perform their religious ceremonies and to settle all legal matters of the community. Architects, photographers, and experts of African history, the authors have succeeded in accurately reading the spiritual and religious 'data' contained in one of the most venerable of African arts yet known." 200 pages; 290 illustrations.
