Edited by Agnes Strickland.TPL 3316 Written after The Backwoods of Canada (1836), it is her second Canadian book. "Agnes made a contract with a London publisher, Arthur Hall, Virtue, and Company, for Catharine's children's story Canadian Crusoes: a tale of the Rice Lake plains (1852), in which three young offspring of pioneers heroically survive two years on their own in the unsettled wilderness north of Lake Ontario. Hall and Virtue also published another book aimed at the children's market, Lady Mary and her nurse; or, a peep into the Canadian forest (1856), the text evolving from the sketches Catharine wrote originally for a Canadian magazine, the Maple Leaf (Montreal), in 1853. As she was to comment in a letter of 1896, "My role in writing has ever been for the young. I rarely aspire to any higher style." quoted from DCB on-line.

She writes about sending "a volume of my poetry, of course a youthful production, having been written seven years before the publication of the first volume of the 'Lives of the Queens of England', a very small impression was printed, and I believe it would be very difficult to obtain a copy anywhere.I have got a first rate sketch of William Rufus for my frontispiece." and continues regarding illustrations. Indentified as "Miss Strickland" in a contemporary hand at head of first page, 2 small ink smudges. Mounting stub and some paper adhesion to margin of last page obscuring a few letters of text.

See her entry in the Oxford DNB. 4pp, 12mo. On bifolium In fair condition, lightly aged, with stub from mount adhering to the inner margin of the recto, and obscuring a few words of text. The male recipient is not named: the letter is signed 'Agnes Strickland / Historian of the Queens of England and Queens of Scotland'. By the advice of the publisher, Daldy, she is enquiring after 'quiet comfortable lodgings at Warwick next Monday 25th till Tuesday August 2nd during the Archaeological Meeting in your antient historical town at which I have promised to be sent'. She gives the particulars of the 'apartments' she requires, including 'a wardrobe, press, or hanging closet for my dresses as I have a good deal of luggage. / I have a maid who will attend on me'. She does not know anyone in Warwick 'except the Countess and not so familiarly as to apply to her about obtaining lodgings besides it would look like spelling for an inviation to the Castle'. It is Mrs Daldy who has furnished her with the recipient's address 'and suggested my consulting you on the subject', and she apologises for 'the freedom with which I have done so'. She ends with the Ipswich address at which she will be staying till the Monday.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
7pp, 32mo. On two bifoliums, stitched together. In good condition, lightly aged. Signed 'Agnes Strickland'. A nice letter with interesting content. Begins: 'Feeling all the kindness of most friendly invitation so sensibly as I do, it gives me the greater regret to be compelled to forgo the pleasure you offer me, of joining my friends Mr. & Miss Mackinnon in your charming home on the 8th of Octr. I have been tempted to linger on, in this delightful and hospitable land from day to day and week after week till the very day you have named is, by some strange fatality, that appointed for my imbarkation at Ardrossan with my young friend Lady Augusta Bruce, [(1822-1876), daughter of the Earl of Elgin, later Lady Augusta Elizabeth Frederica Stanley] the sister of Lady Matilda Maxwell, with whom I am at present staying.' She reports that she is going to spend a few days with her sister Mrs Gwillym at Ulverstone, and then I proceed home as quickly as I can via Lincolnshire and Norfolk, to my own home, where I shall have to write at the rate of ten hours a day to make up for all the time I have spent, in endeavouring to gather more information illustrative of the personal history of the Queen of James 2nd Mary D Esté. | The vol in which she makes her appearance must be out early in the new year. This ties me imperatively to time, and compels me to do violence to my own inclinations, when I give up, or rather, I hope I may be permitted to say postpone a visit to Hardwicke Hall in consequence'. She ends with compliments to Sir Thomas Cullum, and 'hoping one day to renew and improve our acquaintance so agreeably commenced'.
