Catalogue to accompany June 1-August 18, 1991 exhibition at San Diego Museum of Art. 96 pp., illustrated with 52 color & BW plates. ATTENTION: SDMA edition (see photo), not the far more common trade edition by Universe. 27 Artists including Peter Alexander, James Christensen, James Doolin, Anthony Holdsworth, Leslie Lerner, Sandra Mendelsohn Rubin, Wayne Thiebaud, Catherine Wagner. In the last century California had undergone two remarkable transformations, changing from rural agrarianism to rapid industrialization with the outbreak of World War II, and changing from industrialization to the current technology- and science-oriented culture in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Contemporary California artists therefore have three interwoven phases of cultural development from which to draw. The evolving post-agrarian environment, of interest as it has been for the last 50 years to painters and photographers and more recently to artists working in other media as well, is the obvious focus in California Cityscapes. In this book we have the opportunity to examine the work of twenty-seven artists whose primary source of imagery is the urbanscape of California, a subject that is not in the clutches of a Canalettolike production team nor a band of likeminded brush wielders such as the Impressionists. Essays by SDMA Curator, Modern Art, Mary Stofflet; and Professor of Urban Planning, San Diego State University, James A. Clapp. Book.
