Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Reprint. Library stamps/marks/labels/pocket, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover.; Facsimile reprint of 1952 edition, New York: Columbia University Press. "Attempts have been made to arrive at conclusions concerning the attitudes of a society by a selection of expressions of opinion for the entire country. I have employed another method: an exhaustive study of an especially prominent region within the particular nation. I have endeavored to analyze thoroughly the opinions held by contemporary Virginians concerning the "Little Corsican." . Purposes of clarity necessitated, for the most part, an analytical division of the attitudes into three natural segments: opinion of French domestic developments, and of Franco-European and Franco-American relations. Since Napoleon Bonaparte was a product of the French Revolution, I have included an analysis of the attitudes toward the revolution, with emphasis on the later pahse. Moreover, the obverse of certain aspects of Virginian opinion of France was the attitude toward other European countries, especially toward its inveterate foe, Great Britain." - Preface. Contents: I. The Old Dominion in Transition; II. Intellectual and Diplomatic Challenges - The French Revolution and General Bonaparte (1789-1799); III. Virginia at the Threshold: Brumaire and Pacification; IV. Opinion of a Neighbor; V. Napoleon the Betrayer (July 1803-October 1805); VI. The Pacificator or the Beast (c. October 1805-December 1807); VII. Who is the Enemy? An Agrarian Republic in the Vortex of Commercial War (December 1807-March 1809); Conclusion; Select Bibliography; Index. ; Ex-Library; 332 pages.
