Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good, Slight Chips. Book Club Edition. When Julia undertook to find her cousin, Colin Munro, last heard of sailing a yacht off the north coast of Africa, the quest seemed lighthearted enough. But, before she had finished, she was involved with Moorish antique dealers, a Belgian woman archaeologist, Purcell, the enigmatic barkeeper, and American airman, the saurian Mr. St. John, and numerous other characters charming or sinister. Julia"s search takes her a cargo-boart to Casablanca, and thence to Tangier, Fez and Marrakech. Her "dumb-blonde" beauty, camouflaging a lively intelligence, gets her through unexpected difficulties and dangers. Colin is found, and the mysterious reason for his disappearance at last revealed. The first in a series of eight Julia Probyn novels, The Lighthearted Quest displays a blend of humour and adventure which transports us to exotic places and introduces us to entertaining people, but also throws a good deal of light on the explosive political issues that French Morocco encountered in the 50s.320p.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Book Club Edition. Interesting novel set in Turkey and covering the end of the Ottoman Empire and the rise of the Young Turks and Ataturk.Ann Bridge has written a number of novels set in interesting locations, which she knew as the wife of a diplomat and which she describes well. Although the social ambiance of her early works (1930's) may reflect the attitudes of that time, those set in later periods display characters with an appalling assumption of social superiority and of patronising condescension that seems totally inappropriate in the modern world, and which make the stories seem rather too dated in style. Very Good, Slight Chips & Tears. Book.

Unfortunately, the remote French mountain village he chooses is not only impractical, isolated, and far from medical assistance, but is unfortunately also in the path of smugglers and saboteurs. The unhappy and neglected wife of a diplomat, Cottie Sanders O'Malley (1889-1974), became the climbing partner of George Mallory. When Mallory died on Mount Everest in 1924, Cottie wrote a memoir of him. Her memoir was never published, but it provided much of the material used by later biographers such as David Pye and David Robertson and a novel 'Everest Dream'. Quite a scarce book.

Until her cousin, Colin Munro, asked her to look into the matter of one containing a fortune for his fiancee Aglaia Armitage, left to her by her Greek grandfather. Julia, journalist, amateur sleuth, occasional spy, must learn fast. The unhappy and neglected wife of a diplomat, Cottie Sanders O'Malley (1889-1974), became the climbing partner of George Mallory. The lovely 'Enchantress' in the late thirties, the little English governess in her early twenties, full of Oxford enthusiasms, the ardent youth, Giulio, Marietta puzzling over the problems into which she is plunged by the disaster which overtakes her beloved English instructress, the old Marchesa, whose hundredth birthday looms all through the book, above all perhaps the wise, patient Swiss governess all these in turn claim our affection or our pity.
