The six-line letter, which is laid down on a slightly larger piece of lilac paper, was originally on one side of an octavo leaf, but it has had a strip (presumably carrying the name and address of the recipient) beneath the address cut away. It is now in two pieces: 5 x 15.5 and 12 x 15.5 cm. Otherwise very good. Laid down on the top piece is a slip of paper in Hill's hand, reading 'From: Air Commodore Dame Felicity Hill D.B.E. WRAF (retd)'. In the bottom right-hand corner of the second piece of paper is a strip carrying Hill's autograph. She apologises for the delay, thanks the recipient for her good wishes, and encloses 'the autograph you request for your collection'.

Summary:"The Shahnamah of Firdausi produced for the Timurid Muhammad Juki (a grandson of Timur) in the 1440s is one of the finest surviving Persian manuscripts produced between the heyday of Baysunghur's academy in Herat and the appearance of Bihzad." "It has thirty-one exquisite miniature paintings depicting scenes from the epic tale and fine illumination on two pages. The manuscript was presented to the Royal Asiatic Society in 1834 by Lt. Col. C.J. Doyle who had probably received it as a parting gift from Lord Hastings on leaving India. It had previously been in the Mughal Imperial Library and bears the seals of the Mughal emperors Babur, Humayun, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzheb; there is an autograph note by Shah Jahan and further notes reveal its subsequent history." "This monograph written by Dr Barbara Brend is the first complete study of the manuscript and provides a detailed analysis of the cycle of illustrations; a commentary on the Mughal notes by A.H. Morton which offer telling insights into the practices of the Mughal library"--Jacket. CONTENTS: The Shahnamah and the Early Tradition of Illustration The Timurids and their Patronage The Manuscript: RAS, MS. 239 The Illustrations Intentions and Achievements Muhammad Juki's Shahnamah in the Mughal World Notes and Seal Imprints on Folio 536b.
