Links oben außerhalb der Darstellung dünne Stelle im Papier. Vorzeichnung für eine Almanach-Illustration. Retzsch war in Dresden vor allem als Zeichner und Radierer, aber auch als Geschichts- und Bildnismaler tätig. Die Dichtungen S. Gessners (1730-1788) und F. de la Motte Fouqués (um 1775-1831) führten Retzsch seit 1806 allmählich vom Klassizismus zur Romantik hinüber, der er sein ganzes Leben treu blieb. Berühmt wurde er mit Zeichnungen zu Werken der Weltliteratur, wie den Dramen Shakespeares, Schillers Gedichten, Bürgers Balladen und vor allem zu Goethes Faust".
