Item Description: Neale Publishing, 1905. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 114 pages. Krick #374. Frontis portrait of Paxton in Confederate uniform, tissue guard. "This volume, privately printed for the family, is highly important for the warmly human comments of one of the commanders of the Stonewall Brigade." Nevins. "The majority of this slender volume is given up to publication of Paxton's letters written as an officer in the 27th Virginia Infantry, then an aide to Jackson and finally as brigadier commanding the famed Stonewall Brigade. Their content is interesting and sometimes moving. A section of material concerning Paxton's death at Chancellorsville is included. Some copies of the original private printing became Neale books [as this one is] by insertion of a sheet tipped onto the margin of the first page of the foreword. The announcement sheet, which is dated August 5, 1907, declares in part: 'This house offers the volume as originally published for private distribution without change of any kind, other than this announcement.' At the bottom of the page is the statement: 'Published and sold by the Neale Publishing company, Flatiron Building, New York, 431 Eleventh Street, Washington.'" – Krick. First edition, one fine crisp tight bright copy, warm presentation from author to a Paxton relative. The best copy we’ve seen or offered in 47 years. Protected by a clear acid-free mylar dust jacket. Signed and inscribed by the author's wife, whose exquisite illustrations accompany this wok of fiction based on the ancient pueblos in New Mexico that constiture Gan Quivera. This book has no stated date, but Paxton (b. 1922, d. 1976) mentioned it in a biographical blub in 1971, so it was certainly written prior to that. He was more than likely inspired to write the book when he lived in Albuquerque, which is near Gran Quivera and Quarai. Signed by Illustrator(s). Bookseller Inventory # 005078
