Lo sperimentatore non deve considerare, proporre o intraprendere alcun esperimento, ove questo sia tale che - in circostanze identiche a quelle riguardanti il paziente - egli esisterebbe a sottoporvi se stesso, o membri della sua famiglia o altre persone per le quali senta rispetto ed affetto. Questo principio di eguaglianza, aggiunge Pappoworth, dovrebbe essere la pietra angolare dell'intero codice normativo. Ma fino a che punto tale problema interessa anche il nostro paese? Le notizie in proposito sono scarse, tuttavia - come osserva il professor Maccacaro nella sua prefazione al volume - il solo fatto che ogni anno vengano registrate centinaia di specialità medicinali, per le quali è richiesta per legge la sperimentazione sull'uomo, rende evidente che non vi siamo estranei. Si tratta dunque di un problema comune a tutto il mondo, che va affrontato con coraggio e legalizzato entro schemi etici accettati da tutti.
