Ellsworth Woodward and his elder brother William were the founders of the Newcomb Pottery, they taught at Newcomb College and were regarded as two of the most influential figures in Southern art. They were born in Seekonk, Massachusetts, but made New Orleans their home (circa 1876). They promoted Southern culture and art as artists, teachers, and administrators.
