Seller had this book signed personally at a seminar where Mr. Gorbachev was one of the speakers in 1997. It is signed on the title page not a tipped in page or bookplate. It is in as new condition. Forward by Martin McCauley.Russians feel that credit should be given to Gorbachev and not Regan for the distruction of the the "Berlin Wall". Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev born 2 March 1931) was the seventh and last General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, serving from 1985 until 1991, and the last head of state of the USSR, serving from 1988 until its collapse in 1991. He was the only Soviet leader to have been born after the October Revolution of 1917. Gorbachev was born in Stavropol Krai into a peasant family, and in his teens operated combine harvesters on collective farms. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1955 with a degree in law. While at university, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, and soon became very active within it. In 1970, he was appointed the First Party Secretary of the Stavropol Kraikom, First Secretary to the Supreme Soviet in 1974, and appointed a member of the Politburo in 1979. Gorbachev was elected General Secretary by the Politburo in 1985. Gorbachev's attempts at reform as well as summit conferences with United States President Ronald Reagan and his reorientation of Soviet strategic aims contributed to the end of the Cold War, ended the political supremacy of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. Dust jacket now in Brodart mylar protective (clear) cover. Book Description: Doubleday, London, 1996. First English edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed and dated in 1997 by Mikhail Gorbachev opposite the title page. Also signed on a bookplate. Fine in a fine dust jacket. "A timely reminder of what made Gorbachev so revolutionary back in 1985, these memoirs offer a detailed but readable chronicle of his achievements at the top, with the domestic and foreign policy aspects of perestroika covered, chronologically, in separate sections that comprise two thirds of the book. Highly educated compared with his predecessors, Gorbachev is remarkably fair, even to political enemies like Yeltsin, and it often seems that being too nice was part of his undoing. Especially revealing are the real or perceived limits on his power, at the top, to carry out reforms at home despite his successes in foreign policy" (Library Journal). Bookseller Inventory # 3918
