Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Hardcover quarto in gold DJ. xxvi, 196 pages: illustrations; 22 cm. Abstract: "Thomas Merton, the American Trappist monk who wrote The Seven Storey Mountain, spent his literary career in a cloistered monastery in Kentucky. His great counterpart, the French Benedictine monk Jean Leclercq, traveled relentlessly to and from monasteries world-wide, trying to bring about a long-needed reform and renewal of Catholic religious life." "Their correspondence over twenty years is a record of the common yearnings of two holy men. "What is a monk?" is the question at the center of their exchange, and in these letters they answer it with great aplomb, touching on the role of ancient texts and modern conveniences; the advantages of hermit life and community life; the fierce Catholicism of the monastic past and the new openness to the approaches of other traditions; the monastery's impulse toward survival and the monk's calling to prophecy. Full of learning, human insight, and self-deprecating wit, these letters capture the excitement of the Catholic Church in the era of the Second Vatican Council - and the perennial appeal of the life of monastic solitude."--Jacket. Monastic and religious life. Benedictines -- Luxembourg -- Correspondence. Fine in fine DJ. First edition, first printing (full number line).

Papberback. Condition: FINE. Large 8vo, 190 pp. Sewn binding in stiff white wraps which are letterpress printed in green and black. Some light rubbing to extremities, price written in pen and date stamped inside rear wrapper, very clean and sharp otherwise. Second issue of the journal first conceived by Hugh McKiernan who with Brendan Collins anonymously edited the early issues. Print run of 1200 copies. Monastic Studies 'was basically a start-up with no official backing, and noconnection to the corporate world of publishing.' It served as a central voice in the Monastic Renewal movement of the sixties and notably contains the first appearance of many of Merton's mature studies of Monasticism. Merton responded enthusiastically to the appearance of the first issue and volunteered to contribute to future issues. Includes essays by Dodat de Wilde, Jean Guitton, Garcia M. Columbas, Adele M. Fiske, and Claude Peifer. Contains two works published under his monastic name, 'Louis' ('They can have Thomas Merton. He's dead now.' - The Sign of Jonas). The first, 'The Humanity of Christ in Monasti Prayer,' deals with one of Merton's main preoccupations in his last years as his inerest and appreciation grew for mystical and contemplative traditions of other faiths. Namely, 'Mental prayer grows progressively simpler until it becomes 'contemplation' in which therer are few ideas or even none at all, and in which images play little or no part. But Christian prayer is obviously centered on the Person of Jesus Christ.' Merton's second contribution is a translation of Jean Leclercq's essay, 'Benedictine Rule and Active Presence in the World' which deals with themes Merton would take up in his posthumous *Contemplation in a World of Action*, for which Leclercq wrote the introduction.
