Rare ALS from U.S. Constitutional Convention Delegate James McClurg of Virginia dated July 9, 1797. A noted physician and author, McClurg was selected to replace Patrick Henry as a delegate from Virginia to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 when Henry refused to serve, and so sat in Philadelphia along with George Washington, George Mason, James Madison, Edmund Randoph and George Wythe. At the convention, McClurg spoke in favor of increased executive authority, but returned to Virginia in August and did not sign the finished document in September 1787. A lifelong friend of Thomas Jefferson, McClurg served in the Virginia Executive Council during the Washington Administration and was elected on three different occasions as Mayor of Richmond, Virginia. The present letter is a reply to another physician seeking medical advice concerning a patient's stomach ailment. Dated Richmond, July 9, 1797, the letter is one full page and part of a second page all written and signed by James McClurg. Letter written on chain-laid paper, bearing a Federal Eagle watermark, very similar to the eagle later depicted on the verso of the U.S. quarter. Very good condition, with old folds for mailing.
