From the DJ: ¿This is the first complete, authoritative dictionary of the Civil War for the serious student and for the general reader or Civil War buff. For the scholar, the librarian, and the researcher, the book, encyclopedic in scope, is an indispensable reference and guide.¿ How true, even now it remains a great starting point for anyone studying the Civil War. See Nevins, CWB, II, 6: ¿Fulfills a large need; although conscientiously prepared, the work contains a number of omission and errors.¿ More than 4,000 entries, alphabetically arranged including 2,000 biographical sketches of Civil War leaders, both military and civilian; detailed descriptions of all 20 campaigns and entries on lesser battles, engagements and skirmishes. Listed are 120 armies, departments, and districts, as well as such famous smaller units as the Iron Brigade, the 20th Maine, and the Pennsylvania Reserves and 86 specially prepared maps and diagrams, and much much more. A great tool for the student, the teacher or just the ordinary reader interested in the Civil War. Near fine in Good + DJ.
