Illus. by George Cruikshank. Disbound. 32pp. See Cohn 562. The first part of this pamphlet is made up of a translation of a French tale, the story of a Jewish money lender's attempts to destroy a religious artefact. He is thwarted in his efforts, but for his blasphemous crimes is rounded on by his neighbours, and eventually arrested. His fate is to be burned alive, with his family avoiding a similar end only through their conversion to Christianity. The 'infamous fable' is here printed not out of sympathy for its content, but rather to highlight the undesirable effect on society of unbending religious zeal. In this instance it is Catholic doctrine that comes under scrutiny, here highlighted by the demand that the money lender's family convert in order to preserve their lives. Far better to let compassion, forgiveness and common sense guide the citizenry, than ideas of retribution, punishment and indoctrination. Loveday uses the story to highlight his own contemporary plight, whereby his daughters were converted to Catholicism against his wishes.
