Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Stated First Printing, First Edition. Once listed, this will be the Only signed hardcover for sale anywhere on the Internet. The inscription is on the first front end paper. It reads: 'To Jack Neal, With best regards, Judy Lopatin, December 29, 1986.' As you can see from the photos, the gray covers are exceptionally clean. They are also pretty much free of any wear, a little crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine. The edges and corners are in near-perfect condition (there's a tiny nick just off the bottom edge of the front). The page edges are very clean. The black lettering on the spine is very bright and unworn. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. There are no binding issues. The pages are in excellent condition. They appear to be perfectly clean. That includes the white inside covers and end papers. I'm not seeing any creasing of any kind. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is also in excellent shape. It is very clean. It has a little bit of crinkling off the top and bottom spine edges. There are no tears on the jacket. The flaps are in very good condition, very clean. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'These seventeen "romances" invent modern versions of Adventure, Obsession, Perversion-- and even Love-- with a cool hand and a spiky wit. Sometimes rendered in the tough-talking mode of a 1940s pulp novel, sometimes as elegantly designed as an Art Deco hotel, Modern Romances is populated by private eyes and Parisians, nurses and voyeurs, clairvoyants and hairdressers-- not to mention ghosts, lunatics, punks, painters, prostitutes, fascists, and Famous People. From a trip through the cafés and opium dens of the Paris underground with Cocteau and Radiguet, to rumination on the strange powers of the photographer Weegee, to a glimpse of the very private life of a professional dominatrix, the stories feature the dreamers and schemers of life, love, and art. Simultaneously restless and meditative, this collection infiltrates the glamour, dangerous desires, and secret delusions that reside in the heart and on the fringes of cosmopolitan life.' From the rear flap: 'Judy Lopatin was born in Detroit, and now lives in Manhattan. Her fiction has appeared in Mississippi Review, Benzene, Zone, and Diana's Almanac. Modern Romances is her first collection of stories.' The front jacket is an untitled photo by Man Ray from 1930. Inscribed by Author(s).
