Lichtenstein was a remarkable German medical doctor who visited South Africa in 1802, and undertook a most impressive research program that ended in 1806. Characteristic of the scientific attitudes of his time, he planned to "give a regular description of the country, as to its topography, political situation, natural history and ethnography . and a general history." In fact, he achieved all but his last objective, his "Reisen im südlichen Afrika' was published in 1811-12, and has maintained a status of considerable importance to this day. In addition to this work, Lichtenstein wrote in 1810 (but did not publish) a fragment of what was the first history of South Africa. The uncommon manuscript is here published for the first time. The late Dr W.J. de Kock described as the most important section that "in which Lichtenstein offers his own assessment of Boer character, the social and governmental structure of the 18C Cape, and the personal influence of Ryk Tulbagh. A rare and unknown addition to South African historiography . " As an accompaniment to this history Dr Spohr edited and translated one of the papers Lichtenstein wrote after his return to Europe in 1806: "About the Beetjuanas." This critical and comprehensive study . has a wealth of information about the Tswana: history, food, clothes, dwellings, health, education, religion, social structure, war, arts and crafts, and economics.'.
