Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1804, second edition. Written by John Caspar Lavater, translated from the German by Thomas Holcroft. Text in English. 242 pages. Volume one of a four-volume set; this item is for volume one ONLY. Brown half-leather with gilt titles and decoration at spine, marbled paper boards. Boards scratched and edgeworn with frayed edges; leather rubbed and moderately edgeworn, with heavy rubbing to spine tips, points of fraying at fore-edge corners. Spine square. Binding sound. Heavy foxing to first and last few pages, with prior owner's name inked to fly leaf and dated 1816. Interior else clean, with light toning to pages and very sparse foxing through text, but otherwise free of markings.

No Jacket. 3rd Edition, Full Leather, covers and spine detached from text block, wear to covers and spine, corners bumped and worn, boards showing, surface of leather worn on edges and corners, spine has large piece of sticky back plastic holding the covers on and together, starting to come away at edges, another piece has been used to reinforce spine join with back cover, rip at top of spine join with back cover 7cm but remainder still attached, internally in reasonable condition, majority of pages crisp and clear but some wear to edges and corners, a few small rips on edges, some light scattered foxing throughout, binding a little loose throughout, a few places more so, most noticeable between pages 418 and 422 and the plates in between, last two pages (blank) ripped in half horizontally through center.

Frontispiece portrait engraving. Added is "One Hundred Physiognomonical Rules," a posthumous work by Lavater, and "Memoirs of the Life of the Author." "The revision, which will be found at the conclusion of the work, relates to this particular edition of the Physiognomical Fragments of Mr. Lavater, which was published under the inspection of his friend, John Michael Armbruster, in octavo, for the benefit of those who could not afford to purchase the quarto edition. The editor, Armbruster, has changed the order of the fragments, and has omitted some few superfluous passages." (Thomas Holcroft). Illustrated with eighty engraved plates and the frontispiece engraving of Lavater by Holl. Ninth edition with upwards of four hundred profiles, and other engravings. Contains descriptive list of engravings and index at rear. Some light wear along edges of binding with some scuffs on leather, and vertical streak on marbled paper of back cover. Previous owner's name inked to verso of frontispiece. Some damp-staining on first few pages and minor sporadic foxing in block.

The edges and spine ends are rubbed and there are a few spots at the covers, remains Very Good. The contents include many B/W plates of sketched portraitures and illustrations. The plates show some foxing throughout. The inner hinges are loosening however the binding is intact. A previous owner's name is on the endpaper. Contemporary gilt-ruled red calf, gilt-stamped lettering in black leather spine label, gilt-stamped ornament direct in spine compartments (5 ornately gilt-ruled raised bands); 8vo; pp. cxxviii, 507, plus frontispiece portrait and 80 plates. Spine just a touch darkened; some tiny scuff marks along joints and edges of boards. Prelims and terminals foxed, otherwise internally bright and clean. An excellent copy, in a lovely binding. Two additional, contemporary plates have been neatly clipped from another edition of Lavater, and laid-in ("A Portrait" and "Indolence and Drunkenness").
