Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 290 pages. Published in 2000. The author's novel. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents George Konrad's "Stonedial" in a felicitous English translation. A magisterial novel. Konrad, a past President of International PEN, known for his novels criticizing the authoritarianism of Hungary's communism, sets his book in 1993, four years after the old regime has been swept away. A famous author similar to Konrad himself, returns to Kandor, a fictional city very much like Budapest. Slipping between first- and third-person accounts of past and present, Konrad reflects for the first two-thirds of the book, providing historical background and information about his protagonist. Then, in its last third, the narrative suddenly crystallizes: At a party that is being filmed by the mayor, an argument about an incident in the 1956 revolt ensues, resulting in a violent death. "This is an intellectual novel in every sense, by one and about one, intended for page readers rather than page turners" (Richard Lourie). An absolute "must-have" title for George Konrad collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GEORGE KONRAD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0151006199. no.
