Hardback. The Water-Babies (1863) has claim to being the most peculiar book ever to achieve the status of a children's classic. The story follows Tom in his land-life as a climbing boy for a chimney sweep and in his after-life as a water-baby, where he gains redemption from selfishness as well as from drudgery. On top of this fantasy Kingsley grafts a series of digressions and comic asides, through which he comments on a range of contemporary issues. This is the first edition to explore fully Kingsley's text, its variants, and its iconography, and to annotate the many references which enrich the story. Second hand. In fine condition.Presents as new.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. London. Raphael Tuck and Sons Ltd. No Date. Hard Cover. Foolscap 4to 8½" x 6¾" [21.5cm x 17.1cm] approx. 115 pp. Decorative boards in fair condition only. Red cloth spine is split along one side and has wear at each end. Corners are heavily rubbed along with all edges. Endpapers are firm but binding is slackened on some pages in the text block and spine is cocked. Foxing and marking to the pages. Small chip to the title page. Edges of text block show some wear. Six colour plates intact including frontispiece present by Mabel Lucie Attwell as well as many line drawings in the text. A title in the Treasure House Library of the publisher. Abridged version edited by Captn. Edric Vredenburg who worked for the publisher for many years. The Water-Babies was originally published in 1863 as part-satire to support 'The Origin of Species' by Charles Darwin, and quickly became a classic piece of children's literature. As with much of Victorian writings, it functions as a didactic moral fable, telling of young chimney sweep Tom's moral education. Charles Kingsley (1819-1875) was a priest, professor, novelist, poet and friend of Charles Darwin. Despite its many faults the book still holds charm and improves in protective sleeve. Seemed a shame to reject it for flaws. The boards will be covered with a 100 micron inert protective cover which is removable. The Front cover illustrated in full colour by Molly Benatar. Very Small Chunky Quarto = 9" tall. Boards slightly dust-soiled with age, edge-worn in places with some heavier wear/paper loss to the four corners, tinted to match & does look better. The red cloth has faded slightly, with some 'waving' of the cloth, but the black titling is still deep & clear. The Publisher's device on the back cover= Tuck's 'The Storyland Treasury' series. The page fore-edges are lightly toned with age & have a few light inoffensive spots (pale foxing). Internally there is an old gift inscription in faded ink to the top of the front pastedown- dated 1933. The "This Book Belongs To" page has been neatly filled in by the former owner in pencil. The title page & first few pages have some pale foxing, & there is the odd spot here & there occasionally in the book. 6 of the b/w illustrations in the text have been neatly coloured in by the former owner, but overall the book is clean. There were apparently 8 'Come to Life' Pop-up 'Panorama' Gift Books in this series- all following the same format. At the time of listing I have one other for sale - Robinson Crusoe. An odd format culled from other 'Tuck' publications, probably to create gift books for children, but the pop-up is in excellent condition, and the Mabel Lucie Attwell illustrations throughout are as delightful as ever.
