First edition. 441pp. Octavo [20 cm] Red cloth covered boards with decorative red ink stamped designs on the covers, a gilt stamped title bordered by single gilt ruled lines on the spine, and a gilt stamped title in a white panel and gilt borders on the front cover. Very good. The extremities are bumped, and the spine and edges of the covers are sunned. Minor soiling on the boards. The rear hinge is just a little shaky. There is a small label on the front pastedown, and there is a contemporary owner's inscription, along with a small stain, on the front free endsheet. The owner's inscription is offset on the half title page. The endsheets and flyleaves are darkened, and the pages are tanned. Sporadic light foxing throughout the pages. In Hubin. With original illustrations by Arthur Twidle. An early detective novel.

A neat former owner's name and address details stamped to the front free end-paper; slightly soft spine-tips and the red spine faded to a lighter hue. Clean internally. Original publishers illustrated red cloth, lettered gilt on spine and black on front cover. No date, WorldCat (OCLC) states 1911. From the collection of illustrated juvenile fiction (1890- 1930) of Brian Mills (ÕThe DreamerÕ) (1939- 2011). He left no signs of of his ownership but they are distinguished by their excellent bright condition in a genre that often shows up rather wornÉhe was known to constantly upgrade his collection. Author's note describes how this is a fictionalised true story of the Auckland Islands' shipwreck. The ship was the Dundonald. Slight rubbing and corners slightly bumped, otherwise very good. Prize label on the front pastedown, dated 1916.
