Book
Soft cover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Reprint. Robin Hyde was one of NZ's most notable and prolific novelists of the 1930s, as well as contributing in the poetic field. "The Godwits Fly" is semi-autobiographical as the author left NZ in 1938 to visit Great Britain, or "Home" as it was frequently then called. The title derives from the annual migration from NZ to Siberia of the tiny Godwit, just as many young NZers still make a journey to the UK today. Robin Hyde died in Britain late in 1939, seemingly by her own hand. This novel is a wonderful recreation of the time it depicts, traversing the many experiences of a traveller leaving one home bound for another "Home." First published in London in 1938, "The Godwits Fly" was not reprinted until 1970, as the first of a series of reprints of notable novels in "The New Zealand Fiction Series." It found ready reader appeal with further reprints in 1974, 1980 and this one in 1984. The text follows that of the original printing, with only the correction of misprints. The nine page introduction by Gloria Rawlinson traces the life and work of Robin Hyde, there is also a bibliography of her publications and four pages of chapter notes at the back. 236 pages, colour art card covers VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 116 pages. Dj fadedRobin Hyde, author of The Godwits Fly, die d in 1939 at the age of thirty-three. The autobiographical A Home in this World and the attached fragment 'A Night of Hell', both published here for the first time, reveal uncompromising insights into both the struggles and achievements of her life. In a direc t and compelling style, A Home in this World tells of Robin Hyde' s life in the decade following her return to New Zealand in 1927 from Australia after the birth and death of her first child, year s dominated by her continual struggle to cope with the pressures of working as a journalist while reserving time and energy for mo re serious writing. The stresses of her situation were dramatical ly increased with the birth of a son, the result of a brief affai r. When her predicament became known, she lost her job, and there fore the means of support for herself and her child. Desperately short of money and very alone, she felt alienated from her family and their 'tradition of respectability' Despair about her circum stances and concern for the welfare of her son drove her from cit y to city in search of a solution. In 1933 unable to cope any lon ger, Robin Hyde entered the Auckland Mental Hospital as a volunta ry patient. As part of her recovery she was encouraged to write, and she wrote prolivically. In 1937 she ran away, to the boarding -house in the Waitakeres where A Home in this World was written. While A Home in this World can be seen as a sequel to The Godwits Fly, it has a more open style, a greater frankness. As Derek Cha llis notes in his Introduction, 'It is this frankness combined wi th the exceptional beauty and sensitivity of the writing that mak es the work Robin Hyde's finest.' A Night of Hell', a third perso n account of her drug experiences, was written later in 1937, whe n Robin Hyde was living in Milford.
