Soft cover. Condition: Good Plus. 1st Edition. First edition. 19.5 × 12.5cm, 112pp. This copy has been signed by Gweno Lewis, the widow of Alun Lewis, directly to the title page. Alun and Gweno met in 1939 and married in 1941. In 1942 Alun Lewis's regiment shipped to India and she was never to see him again, he died in Burma in 1944. Gweno lived until 2016, working to keep her husband's poetry in print, including this collection in 1981. This copy comes from the library of Anne Powell, anthologist, author and historian of both the First and Second World Wars. This collection presents a generous choice of Alun Lewis's best poems, and arranges them chronologically for the first time. The selection reveals Lewis, in the words of Jeremy Hooker's perceptive afterword, as 'essentially a poet of feeling' and 'a tender love poet', as well as a poet with a spiritual quest centering on what Lewis called 'the single poetic theme of Love and Death'. It establishes his place among the important poets of this century, not as a 'war poet' in any limited sense, but as one who struggled with the great universal problems of his time forced them upon him, and expressed them with an integrity and moving imaginative daring. Condition: This copy is in very good condition, with a little light scuffing to the joints. The pages are clean and the binding is secure. Signed by The Editor.
