Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Solid retired library book with usual library markings; else VG. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. In great shape. Covering the significant phases of this era, Professor Hicks deals in a clear, concise narrative with one of recent history's most interesting periods. These were years that began with economic confidence, gaiety and idealism; the United States was a world power; both natural and human resources seemed inexhaustible. But when the people's expectations failed to materialize, optimism changed to disillusionment and withdrawal. Farm income, which had been high during the war, began to dwindle, and efforts to solve the problem of surpluses were blocked by a conservative executive. Attempts to withdraw from foreign entanglements, beginning with repudiation of the League of Nations, proved, impossible; the ineffectiveness of the disarmament agreements was evidenced by Japan's aggression in China. The scandals of the Harding administration came as a shock, as did the speakeasy and the gangster. And the economy, which had boomed to new heights for several years, collapsed resoundingly in 1929 from overexpansion and speculation. Professor Hicks analyzes the battle between labor and agriculture on the one side and industry and government on the other. He probes into the causes of the 1929 crash and the depression that followed. He examines the effects cf the high tariffs at home and abroad. He traces the progress in various technological fields; measures the importance of the automobile, the movies, the radio; and provides fresh insight into the political, social and economic forces of the twenties. 318 pages.
