Inscribed to Terry Tempest Williams on red front free endpaper: To Terry Reprint of my first novel, full of natural history and mother-loss,* Fondly Shelby, 1988, North White Plains, *my own still here, at 83. Hearon has additionally made two annotations to the copyright and dedication pages, adding my children underneath the dedicatees, and she has signed her name in full at the end of the one-page introduction. Born in Kentucky, she was a longtime resident of Texas and her papers are held at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas, Austin.
