Mass-market paperback. Lada, Joseph (Illustrated by). (illustrator). 5th printing, 1963 1st. CY633. Mass market (rack) paperback. Glued binding. Audience: General/trade. Satirical fiction about a simple-minded soldier, based on the author's experiences as a 1915 draftee in the Austrian Army, soon captured by Russians and held prisoner for 5 years, then to the Czech Legion under Russian command, before joining the Red Army to fight against his former Russian commanders. Jaroslav Hasek, b.1883, Prague-d.1923, Tuberculosis, began writing this tale on his 1920 return to Prague. He planned 6 volumes and wrote 4 before TB took him. In the years to follow, several European armies banned this title from its barracks, a supreme tribute for an antiwar writer, or any writer. For, in Schweik's world, "it is good to live and bad to die". Very good. Blending in w/ cover art, there is evidence of life briefly as a coaster, saving the next owner the guilt. Square, tight, w/ smooth spine. 1 0.0.

Near Fine with slight soiling to cloth, hint of wave to textblock, in a Very Good+ dust jacket, closed tear to front panel, mends to verso, light rubbing, unclipped ($3.00 net). Uncommon in such an attractive example of the dust jacket, which oddly enough sports the transposed title Schweik the Good Soldier. A major work of Eastern European literature as well as one of the first anti-war novels, satirizing the exploits of the Austro-Hungarian empire's Don Quixote in World War I.
