Small Octavo. 288 pages, index. Illustrated. The author was often called a Bohemian for his association with Ezra Pound, Alfred Stieglitz, and the aging Walt Whitman. He was among the first serious art critics to see photography as an art. This work was published as he returned to Japan in 1940 to become Professor at Saito University. He was one of the few Japanese Americans not sent to a relocation camp in World War II because of his poor health (he died in Banning, California in 1944). His papers are largely contained at the University of California, Riverside. Bound in a red pictorial gilt cloth depicting flying birds in gilt, gilt lettering blocked in red, pictorial gilt spine lettered in gilt, binding signed "FR", top edge gilt, all others uncut. Previous owner's name in Pencil "M. Douglas, Yokohama, 1904". A very nice copy.
