Slightly tanned cut edges. The text block is quite firm, straight and with one very tanned prelim and one very tanned end paper; the rest of the pages are unmarked. With many b/w plates. The second section which covers the seventeenth century consists of 129pp including 49pp of black and white illustrations plus 2 double-page maps. Finally, the third section which covers the eighteenth century consists of 125pp including 47 black and white illustrations. The text to the first section has sporadic foxing; otherwise in very good condition. The price-unclipped dust jacket is stained to the title on the front cover and is lacking a number of small sections to the corners and edges with the result that the red boards are slightly faded in places.; in addition the rear cover has a closed tear down two-thirds of the book adjoining the spine.

No Jacket. an unusual hardback copy, possibly the final proof before publication, printed blue housing with cord ties to the leading edges, inside of which is a paper wallet which contains the disbound complete book in the order that it appears in the bound edition, complete with the endpapers & advertisement, the plates to the rear. The covers unevenly faded, splitting to the lower joint and lacking a half inch piece at the head of the spine, internally very good, clean and unmarked.
