This facsimile prepared from the first edition of 1934. The argument over the origin of syphilis -- did Columbus bring it from the new World, or did his sailors take an affliction previously unrecognized in Europe to the natives of the newly discovered lands? -- has yet to be settled. What is indisputable is that the most influential early book on the "French disease" (to use one of its many sobriquets) was written by Girolamo Fracastoro.
